(17,665 posts)I've been checking back periodically and thinking of you and Toby.
So what was the final diagnosis? And when did they find the cancer on the liver?
Either way - ANY way, welcome home, Toby!!!

but he isn't bleeding internally as he was. At this point he will need to go to the Vets two or three times a week to have his abdomen drained. All we can do now is try diet and meds to reduce the pressure and hope he somehow heels.
The good news this week is that he is strong enough to come home.
On edit...they found cancerous cells in his liver during exploratory surgery to find the leak in his system. They don't believe it had anything to do with the fluids, but they removed them and administered chemo. Probably the earliest detection and treatment of liver cancer in a dog ever.

(12,272 posts)And portal hypertension is a common cause of ascites in humans. I am hoping that after the swelling in his liver goes down, it will resolve the problem.

(9,494 posts)We are hoping that the Prednisone and Lasix plus the new diet he is on will start to make a difference. Let's hope you are right!

(11,065 posts)Hopefully he'll continue to improve, but this is surely a big step forward. I've been thinking about how you and Toby were doing, so I'm really glad that things are looking up. Toby looks very happy and in surprisingly good shape in that photo.
Please keep us posted on how things are going.

(9,494 posts)He's a little underweight but he looks and feels great after he gets drained. But really, being home has made all of the difference. He went from despondent to happy about four blocks from my house! He hadn't eaten well for a week but when I served up breakfast he begged for his when he saw his brothers scarfing theirs down. It's so nice to see his smiley face!

(11,065 posts)I think any dog would be. Home is where they feel comfy with the folks they know whether people or critters and it's their known home environment where they feel safe and loved. I'm really encouraged that Toby's enthusiasm has perked up so much just in being able to be home again. His wanting to eat is a big deal... if he's wanting his chow than he's feeling pretty good. It doesn't seem to take much to put a dog off their food afterall.
He certainly looks much better. If I didn't know about his recent problems from that picture I wouldn't guess there was a thing wrong with him.
I so hope they can find out what this mystery thing is and get him fixed up.

I am so happy to hear he is home and feeling better! You can sure see that in your other picture!
Hugs for Toby!!

(18,219 posts)It is a very good sign that there is no more blood in the fluid, but I do wish they could find the cause and treat it. Hopefully they will stumble onto meds and diet that will clear it up. Some times, we don't know for sure the cause of a problem, but just find something that works for some reason.
Good luck. We're rooting for you, Toby.
