As you know, our Shih-Tzu, Fat Alberta, never passed anything even remotely edible without eating it. She is 17/12 of her ideal weight . . . . and growing.
A down-the-street neighbor who is also a dog person put us on to this idea. They sometimes raise service dog puppies, and always have two or three extra dogs they foster.
She told us about thawed frozen cut green beans. Very low cal, and for some odd reason most dogs like them. We are now giving them as treats in place of the commercial dog treats we used to give. They're cheaper, too.
The little one and the big GSD took right to them. The much smarter Border Collie was a little skeptical at first, but she now eats them, too. And they're not just eating them. They **REALLY** love them as treats!

And why am I not surprised that the Border Collie wasn't so sure about this. Smart dogs.

(12,592 posts)We have a GSD who had to thin down a bit as a pup.
The doc told us to stir in a half cup of green beans into
a smaller portion of her kibble and substitute large carrots
for her chewy treats. She dropped about 10 lbs

(11,065 posts)The first one liked lots of fruits and veggies especially bananas. The other two have been more picky and don't like fruits much, but they like a lot of veggies... even those I don't like at all like lima beans. Yuck, I hate limas, but I can always pick them out and give them to the doggie.
Are there no frozen mixed veggies that don't put in limas???

(6,783 posts)Treats are things like carrots and green beans and apple slices. Maybe some bannana.
I'm cooking for him now and his meals usually consist of baked sweet potato mashed with non-fat chicken broth with some peas and carrots or mixed veggies or geeen beans stirred in and a small amount of shredded chicken breast added. Maybe some rice added.
Or maybe I'll make some malt-o-meal using chicken broth and add some veggies and chicken.
Or maybe I'll make some doggie fried rice - white rice plus peas and carrots plus some scrambled egg.
He's an old dog and his renal disease has progressed. We've just started giving meds and he now gets sub-q fluids 2 or 3 times a week. I've known for a decade that this day was coming. Still, it sucks. My little guy could use some good thoughts. He's a sweet happy boy who is eager to please.

Positive thoughts that what you are doing, the meds and sub -q fluids will give you both more quality time together.

Will think good thoughts for your little guy.

(14,070 posts)A lady at our local dog park told me this one too. Her vet had suggested giving her Weimaraner some green beans in place of some of his dog food when he started getting a bit chunky.
My dog is very slender but she absolutely loves green beans and cooked carrots. We give her some from our plates now and then.
