Our little Ms Kandi - the (almost) 4 pound Chihuahua is

our 3rd Chi who gives mountains of cuteness and love. Like I said, she is our 3rd. Her two older brothers have passed on. We got her from a (suspected) puppy mill when she was only 1.5 pounds at 5 weeks old. It's incredible how much joy and love this little sweetie gives us. Her "sister" is a 14 pound Russian Blue kitty who loves to chase her around the house. There are times we turn off the tv to watch the fun as they play tag. LOL

I've always adopted large breed dogs. I overlooked the small breeds because I thought they were "yappy" animals but all three of ours are very quiet. As a matter of fact, Ms Kandi never barks even if someone is outside. No .... she will jump off the sofa and hi-tail it to the bedroom when she hears someone. The only time she ever barks is if she's hungry, needs to go outside to do her business or when she's being given her treats.

I couldn't imagine how empty our lives would be without her. We are so blessed.

I had the joy of getting to see a local dog agility participant run her spectacular Chihuahua last weekend. Amazing little athlete! I love it when we are at the same trial.

Our neighbor's aptly named, "Lil' Dog", has been an absolute angel to everyone he meets from the day he came into their home. When they adopted him, as a rescue fail, they had an older mixed breed who was about 60 lbs. These two boys became best buddies immediately. Lil' Dog knew Jake was an old guy and when he had been sleeping a while he would go over to his nose to make sure he was breathing ok. When Jake passed he started having separation anxiety when his humans were both out of the house. Fortunately that isn't often since they are retired. My dog loves him but when he sees the bounding Border Collie mix coming his direction he just steps aside before she knocks him over with greetings.

I have gotten a whole new respect for these little guys from these two great dogs. I always saw them as the little biting dogs my great aunt had. But like any dog, socialization and training make them comfortable and happy around everyone.

She looks just like my sister's chihuahua that she got in the late 1950s or early 1960s:

This picture was taken in 1961 and he was very young then. Some of the pictures I have of him, his face is almost completely white. Chichi lived to be nearly 20 years old! That's an advantage of the small breeds - they tend to live longer than the big ones.

My son is a breeder and used to breed Chihuahuas and gave her to me when she was just 6 weeks old. She is now 5 years old. She is chocolate colored and weighs 7-1/2 pounds. She is also spoiled rotten. I always spoil all my pets.

Voodoo -- the male (as a baby) (nickname: Boo Boo)

Here he is older. He is a very spoiled dog. For the first year of his life, I don't think his little feet touched the ground. When we moved to New Orleans, we bought a special carrier which looked like a baby carriage. You should have seen the looks we got when he'd pop his out of the back given that people thought we had a baby in the carriage. LOL! I always explained he was so hairy because he took after me.

This is Laveau, named after the Voodoo Queen (get it?) of New Orleans, Marie Laveau. (nickname: Big Girl (she's 7.5lbs.)) She is the lady of the group. She does her best to avoid potty time in front of others. She also doesn't care for outsiders. She goes up to explore them, then walks off as if to say, "Thank you no, I have enough friends."

This is Marigny (MARE-uh-knee), and is Laveau's half-sister. (nickname: Pretty, pretty princess) She is our lover. You could ax-murder us and she would go home with you! She loves new people, animals, and places. She just lost her best friend, our cat, Tony. She mourned him for almost a month, and still looks for him sometimes. She is also very strong-willed and doesn't listen very well.

This is Zatanna (nickname: Da baybee (Baby)) She is the boisterous one. For the first two weeks we had her, he didn't hear a peep from her...now, she makes her opinion known! She likes to sit on her butt, and chew her nails as she watches certain TV shows. She likes to kiss us right on the mouth! She will also take food right out of your mouth!

Kandi Girl would be welcome in what we call the Kingdom of the Chihuahuas!
