I have loved frogs for as long as I can remember so I was thrilled when a tree frog decided to lay her eggs in one of our horse tanks this year.
I had been watching them develop (there were hundreds at first) and when I went out to check on them yesterday only three were left.
As I was watching I saw a large bug of some sort appear out of the deep and drag one of them down.
Horrified, I ran into the house, grabbed a jar and tried to catch the last two. I only found one and the end of his tail was bitten off.
I set him up in a container w/rocks and some cover and for now he seems to be holding his own.
I wish I would have checked on them sooner.
Behind the Aegis
(53,831 posts)It is difficult to watch nature take its course. I like frogs, toads not so much. This last spring, none of the chicks survived in the robin's nest that is used every year.

(57,349 posts)I love all animals - even snakes and spiders, hell I love them even more because so many hate them.
Once you start to see nature, I mean really see it, it's impossible to distance yourself from the drama going on all around you.

(22,418 posts)Crazy frog lady. I have been feeding mine fish food. I too started with over a hundred. I am wondering if there are any left alive after the rain we just had. I found out recently that the parents will eat them. I am horrified at the thought. It seems so counterproductive and I so want them to make it!

(18,219 posts)but I believe in intervention. I wish you could have noticed this sooner, but at least that one frog will appreciate you. And just maybe, next year, that frog will be part of adding more froggies to your property.
