About my wonderful Dog! And that I'm perhaps paranoid.

I don't know if this is an issue for this forum exactly, but part of it concerns my sweet Border Collie mix, Layla.

This very forum advised me well after the shredded leather chair incident that happened when our girl was 6 months old saying, "That dog needs a JOB!" I didn't really understand "job" where my dog was concerned, she got exercise, then we found dog agility and I get it, it's for her brain stupid human! Now we are both addicted to her full employment.

We are heading off to the great state of TN for another agility trial tonight. I live in Lexington, KY and Kentucky just doesn't have enough agility trials. I like trials in Ohio well enough, but when you put a fast dog with a novice, middle-aged handler; TN has some terrific locations where I can use our distance handling to try to overcome some of our issues. I love those trials too, nice people, well-organized, good food, good crating space, generally less expensive hotels, and a fun time.

I've begun to worry about driving around looking liberal outside of Lexington though, the way the gun nuts are acting. Yes, this is Kentucky, but a city with a large university in the middle of it and lots of educated people. I don't worry about going to Louisville either; the rest of Kentucky and Tennessee; I worry. A couple of weeks ago a good friend encountered a gun displaying, arms worshiper at Kroger who told her open carry was his "God given right". (I told her she shouldn't have talked to that guy.) With all this on my mind, I took my liberal bumper-stickers off last night and asked my husband and sister if they thought I should leave the one with a human evolving from an ape into a well-dressed man walking a Border Collie. Evolution you know, the EBILLLLLL! They both said they didn't think it would get us shot. I feel like I've betrayed my political identity, and that I surely must be paranoid, but it only takes on gun nut at a rest area or drive through to decide that damned liberal needs to be taught a lesson, and what if he shot Layla? I think I'd get shot too, just trying to get my nails into him. Paranoid, yea, safer than I was, I think so. Layla rescued me and my husband both; she is a giant part of our hearts. My little team-mate is more important than what's on the back of my car, even if it only adds to my peace of mind.

Nothing probably would happen, but why take a risk? I doubt if anyone would be converted by a bumper sticker, anyway.

Stay safe, both you and Layla. Fantastic picture of that beautiful girl!

If only for my peace of mind I think it was worth it. But to me it is a sign of the times, scary times.

live your life and convictions. Fear and intimidation is how they feel superior. If you succumb to your doubts and see only the dark side of life and what might lurk in shadows, you might as well stay at home, shut off the lights, bolt the door and tell yourself that Fox News and their minions have won.

By the way, I had a border collie once. Feel in love with the cute, brown teddy bear of a pup but as it grew I knew it could not survive in an apartment and gave it away to a couple who had a big yard and children. A great dog.

At least I won't show fear now, I won't be feeling intimidated even when I haven't been, because I have declared an identity someone else doesn't like.

Border Collies are wonderful! Such sweet-tempered and loving dogs. I am so glad we have her; Border Collie fitness coaches are the best.

Being invisible is a good thing.

Good luck with the agility! When I do it with my dogs, I'm definitely the weak link in the chain.

I am a human refusal factory! I have stood in front of a jump as she came out if a tunnel and all she could do was stop and look at me. Silly primate tricks.

When you're transporting your dog, it makes moral and ethical sense to remove stickers that might place you BOTH at risk in hostile environments.

Any time someone else's safety depends on your decisions, it changes the risk equation.

Your decision makes perfect sense.

encouragingly,
Bright

I agree. Layla is sleeping next to me righ now in the hotel and I look at her and think how innocent if human stupidity our gentle animal companions are.

Don't risk your health and happiness over a bumper sticker. We can stick it to them in other ways.
