So excited - I had to share!!! My bf and I decided to adopt two shelter kitties. We talked about this for a while He moved here (CT) from CA a few years ago and had to put his 17-year-old cat down not long before the move. He had renal failure and it was time.
We'll be bringing them home later this week after the shelter calls his former vet in CA for a reference and we get all our supplies.
Here are our new little girls -- we're going to name the black one Isis and the other one Aja ("Asia" - after the Steely Dan album).

(18,219 posts)They are so much harder to place than kittens....but they will really appreciate it. I have always adopted adult cats, and they have always been lights in my life.

She's seven and I've had her for going on four years. She is a bit shy of strangers until she warms up to them, is very independent and only wants a little lap time in the evenings. Otherwise she's off doing her own thing. I often hear her galloping around late at night, upstairs to downstairs and playing with tennis balls like a crazy cat. She's larger than average with a very long tail and tufted feet--we think she's some sort of Maine Coon mix or Turkish Angora. Her fur is very downy and fine. She does not get mats though--it just falls out and collects in little balls in the corners.

The first thing Isis taught us is that we really need to use a dustmop in the corners of our place more. She was a little dustmop goblin the first day. Working on fixing that, though.

(2,379 posts)Thank you for all the well wishes. It's been an exhausting few days. We got the girls on different days and one was at a shelter about an hour away .... long car ride home in the carrier with strangers.
These kitties couldn't be more different.
We got Isis on Tuesday. It took her about an hour to get oriented to the new surroundings. She seeks out being petted with no hesitation and will wiggle under your hand and push it on top of her head if she has to. She won't get on either of our laps, doesn't like to be picked up, and doesn't want our faces near her. Maybe some of this will change. She jumped up and slept on our bed the very first night.
We took her right from the shelter to the vet because this shelter was more of a "city pound" type place and they didn't even have a vet look at her. No vet records. All they knew was that she had been spayed because of the scar (our vet confirmed that). She was definitely someone's pet, though. She's not aggressive at all and totally behaved at the vet. I was amazed. The only noise was a little wimper during each shot (rabies and first distemper). She checked out FIV/FeLV negative. We just have to keep the two cats in separate rooms with separate litter boxes until we can get a stool sample so they can check for parasites.
We got Aja yesterday. She's very skittish. They had tried placing her in a family with small kids and multiple pets and they just let her hide for most of the month or two they had her. She's in my office and I made a little cubbyhole safe spot for her under a rarely used desk. She's at the point now where if you lie on the floor with your head lower than hers, she'll come over and try to rub her forehead to yours and then she'll plop down for petting. She's very jumpy at any noise from other rooms, but getting a little better. Other than a quick vet exam once she settles in, she won't need any shots, etc. until Dec. The shelter she came from is a no-kill facility and she's been well taken care of while there and they gave us a full set of vet records with vac. history going back 1-1/2 years. (The two shelters were like night and day.)
They're both used to being near a lot of other cats at the shelters. Once we get the parasite all-clear on Isis, we're going to brace a screen in front of my office door and let them see each other through it. Hope they take to each other.
As far as Mr. Autumn and me, we've turned into baby-talking, babbling, mush brains. Already sooooo attached to our new babies.
