We all know to use products with DEET and follow some special precautions to keep ourselves safe. We also should be using some precautions to keep our pets safe. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Poison Control Center does not recommend that any product with DEET be used on pets. This can be very toxic to pets and can create neurological problems.
First, make sure your pets are on heartworm prevention. Your pet needs a yearly heartworm test by your veterinarian (or on a schedule determined by your veterinarian.) Heartworm prevention is lifesaving and is a minimal monthly cost compared to how much it costs for your vet to treat heartworms.
If possible, keep your pets inside at prime mosquito time: dawn and dusk. Eliminate any type of standing water on your property. Empty out your pets water bowls a couple of times a day to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
Check with your veterinarian for the best topical product that also may repel mosquitoes. There are some products that repel both mosquitoes and biting flies.
