Related: About this forumOur beloved Murphy has gone over the bridge......
I have been a rolling stone most of my life, and often had to pass my cats onto a friend/relative when I moved.
but Murphy I have had since he was born, 15 years ago.
I was HIS, from day one, and he totally ignored anyone else, tho would sorta share a space with another cat who came into our lives
He slept with me every night, and we would have disagreements as to how much of the pillow he could share.
No matter where I went in the house, he would be at my feet, purring.
I really consider him the Golden retriever of cats ( a lot of people know how nutz I am about Goldens)
Murphy DID have a few rules:
1. "do not pick me up. "
I could briefly do so if I set him on a table to groom him, but being carried around, nope.
2." Do NOT take me to the vet."
that started with the neuter thing, and got worse. Our local vet quit smiling when we came thru the door.
Murphy took a chunk out of Mr. dixie's hand when he came to get him from the vet, a couple years ago.
I think he would have done the same to me.
Otherwise, he was a sweetheart, and would sit and lie down on command, and loved to be held and petted.
Few days ago we had to make a tough love decision, Murphy had a severe abscess in his face/mouth, and the vet wasn't sure there could be a good outcome,
given Murphy's age.
so here is my memory picture of a most special guy in my life, in his favorite flowerpot.....he would spend hours in the shade there.

(18,634 posts)I have too many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be thankful for our wonderful years.
I gave to you my love, you can only guess . . .
how much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
but now it's time I travelled on alone.
So grieve a while for me if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a time that we must part,
so bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me call, and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear.
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then when you must pass this way alone,
I'll greet you with a purr and say "Welcome Home!"

(60,010 posts)That is a beautiful poem,
but I am now blubbering like a baby.
Gonna make a folder with this pic and that poem in it on my desktop.
Funny how some cats in your life are just nice cats and once in awhile one moves so firmly into your heart.

A few years ago, my friend the Animal control lady brought me a 4 week old kitten that had been in teh wall of a local business.
There are surprising number of kittens found in walls around here, weird.
Anyhow, I bottle fed this teeny black kitten, planning on just fostering it, I do a lot of fostering.
But he grew on me, and even Murphy put up with him, so did the Golden, so we kept Boomer.
He was 3 years old when he got bit by a rattlesnake under our deck.
Off to the vet, and no choice, had to put him out of his misery, it was, by the time he came to me in the yard, an advanced bite.
Boomer was a short hair black cat with lovely green eyes, and when he was hungry, he would sit in front of the buffet, where the dry cat food was stored at one end.
Fast forward to 18 months later.....an adult short hair grey cat shows up on my porch. With green eyes.
I opened the door and he walked right in, past the dog who was lying on the floor. The dog did not even lift his head.
Murphy was lying on a chair by the dog, did not move.
The cat walked right up to the buffet door and sat down and looked at me.
I fed him.
He ate, stretched, and then went over to Boomer's favorite chair, jumped up and took a nap.
And stayed with us for 2 years.
I named him Bailey ( Won't you come home,Bill Bailey, won't you come home?"...song)
Calmest most placid cat I have ever seen. Not a great cuddler...neither was Boomer, liked to be around hoomins, but not pushy for pets.
His one bad habit was he loved to get into people's pickups in the yard.
And one day after the meter reader had been here with his pickup, Bailey was gone.
I am certain he rode along until he spotted a house he wanted, and moved in on someone else.
Here is Murphy and Bailey, sharing the cat chair....Bailey is in Boomer's spot.

(9,819 posts)Cats are indeed mysterious creatures and I think most of them lead a double life.

(60,010 posts)for the euthanasia.......
I found out about when the bill came.
As homicidal as Murphy could be at the vets, he moved their hearts also.

(53,936 posts)It is never easy. I noticed you and your husband hearing phantom noises; my husband and I both did too. The worst part was our chihuahua, Marigny, who was Tony's best friend, but Tony tolerated her ( ) looked for him for almost two months.
He was a very handsome boy and that is a great picture of him.
Again, very sorry for your loss.

(60,010 posts)I have got up from the puter twice now since he has been gone, because I could hear the gentle almost whispery tap tap tap he would make on the patio screen to be let in.

Being a responsible pet parent ain't for sissies, is it?

(18,219 posts)Feel sad. Feel lonely. Feel regret that this was what had to be done. But you did the best thing for him...and the hardest thing.
I know how hard it is, been there too many times. And one time that I waited too long and that will also make you feel guilty. It is very true that it ain't for sissies.
