We lost our Cindy in January at 14 years old. She was my shadow and I miss her so much. This past Sunday we brought home Riley,11weeks old and a Border Collie/Lab mix. I forgot what it was like to have a puppy in the house!
I love him already and I am exhausted 😀.

(10,123 posts)Look at those big paws! Probably going to be more Lab-sized.
Had a cat named Riley. He was a non-purebred Maine Coon type with big paws but he never got real big like a proper MC. He was a sweet boy, miss him.

(24,344 posts)Cindy was a German Shepherd/Doberman mix. Riley has his 12 week vaccinations next week. I think he just weighs 8 lbs right now.
Your Riley must have been beautiful. I miss all of my pets, too.

I have two Border Collies, and I have friends with Labs, I guarantee you are exhausted!
Riley will be a great dog! He is so handsome!!!!! And he is a mix of sweet breeds.
livetohike
(24,344 posts)do n't remember our ACD being that way. He is sweet though. It's as if you can see his little brain working and today he went into that Cattle Dog position where they lie down and stare at you.

Forgive my canine ignorance - what is an ACD?

(14,048 posts)Both my dogs were super nippy until after teething. I had to wear only clothes I would throw away soon anyway around my boy since he would rip them.

(24,344 posts)ago. Cindy had diabetes the last year of her life and every day was a new worry. In five days, Riley has brought so many laughs. It's a blessing.

(12,560 posts)How cute. Puppies (or at least their pictures) are great to relieve stress. In the end, puppies are worth the work and lost sleep because they grow into such loyal companions. They can definitely keep you running in the beginning. So, it's a good thing they're so damn cute.
PS: Riley's got good size paws on him. Big boy. Enjoy!

(139 posts)thinks she need maternity leave! She said it's like having newborns in the house! She had two pugs for approx 8 years until the past year when both were lost and she missed them horribly. Good luck with your Riley!
livetohike
(24,344 posts)have come home with two of them. We're going to look for another puppy after Easter. It's actually easier with two. One learns from the other.
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's loss. I's always so heartbreaking .

(2,560 posts)I hadn't had a dog for years and I was completely dumbfounded by how much work a young dog is. I'd completely forgotten. Just under two years ago, he passed on. I'm still broken hearted. Yesterday, I looked on a Dobermann rescue site here in The Netherlands and there was a six month old dog whose owner couldn't look after him because he was so much work! Yep, could have told you, pal. So, I've applied to adopt him. My wife and I can give him lots of love and attention....AND, he'd be good for me!! Get me out the house a bit (read "a lot"
and get me back into walking. He sounds like he's become the boss of his own particular situation, but I've got experience with Dobies and we'll get on fine. I actually love their independent streak. But I used to look into my Dobie's eyes and I'd just say "Cut it out" and he'd come and cuddle me and say (in body language) "Oh, Dad, I was just fooling around".
Edited to add: I'm sure everything will go well with Riley!!
livetohike
(24,344 posts)with you! My brother in law always had Dobermans. They need a special person to love and be loved.
Our Cindy wasn't getting around much in her last year. Just short walks, so I'm looking forward to more exercise now (and losing this winter weight!).

Sorry folks, but I'm a bit prejudiced having had both breeds.
Love to you, livetohike, and sweet little Riley. And I'll throw in some luck to you in dealing with that ball of puppy energy.

(2,353 posts)I've been thinking lately about the life cycle of the dog lover. My Sally is 10 years old now and as you say is my shadow. We can't hike anymore but there is something so sweet about the older dog and she's still playful pretty often. I'm sorry about your Cindy, losing them breaks our heart but I know I can look forward to the next baby too. You're brave to jump in with such a young one!
Best to you both and we like pictures
