Related: About this forumPlease educate me on talkative cats
Our first cat meowed when he was hungry, made that little "vrrrup" sound when jumping up, and meowed back at us when we said his name.
Good lord our new cat Charlie has more to say than I do (and honestly that is saying something) - he talks before he eats, after he eats, whenever I leave a room he follows and "scolds" me - I don't know what else to call it. Follows me meowing, meows when he explores stuff, meows when it's play time, meows when it is bed time. Sometimes he just wanders off into another room meowing to no one in particular. Apparently he also meows at my husband when he is in the shower.
The only time he doesn't meow is when I try to record it.
He is 1 1/2, clean bill of health, a rescue we have had for just over a month....there he goes...as I am typing this I hear him meowing away in another room...oh it's getting closer.
Some meows sound mournful, some sound like just random mutterings. So any advice - I don't mind it - just want to make sure he is ok

He is so freaking adorable...I love it.

(16,993 posts)Not a cute little "meow" more of a "MAAHH"? I have a very large, solid black that sounds like that. It's typical of a Siamese which are loud and talkative. He was a foundling so I don't know his lineage but suspect Siamese is in there somewhere. He's 18 now so doesn't talk as much. When he was young he wouldn't shut up, talked all the time.

(3,702 posts)sometimes all at once. Maybe it was from being in a cat sanctuary - he learned the languages of many cats and thinks I am stupid because I don't understand. He just keeps trying a new one.

(34,131 posts)The mutated albino gene removes the melanin from the body while leaving color on the points (ears, face mask, legs, tail). Other Siamese colors have different base colors changed by the same gene.
The same gene is responsible for dun, buckskin and grulla horses which I bred for many years. One of my mares has the same coloration as a seal point Siamese. In horses, there are different combinations of base colors so the horses can have a gold body with dark points, rather than the cream color body - in that case the red melanin is removed but the yellow is left. In the case of my mare, both red and yellow melanin are removed from her coat.

(115,587 posts)Some of them are like that. One of mine doesn't talk much unless he wants something like food or attention; but then he lets out loud, sharp MEOWs that make it impossible to ignore him. His meows are almost always pitched at high E-flat. Another, the noisiest one, will sometimes wander around the house going YOW YOW ROWR WOW in a loud scratchy voice (I think he's part Siamese), which I figured out usually means YOU NEED TO GO INTO THE KITCHEN RIGHT NOW AND GIVE ME TREATS. But sometimes I think he just talks to hear his head rattle, as my dear departed Dad would say. The third seldom meows but communicates in trills, hums and chirps. Whenever you talk to her or touch her she says "Prrrrp?"
Chatty kitties are the most fun, I think.
nadine_mn
(3,702 posts)He has quite a range - I guess meow doesn't do it just it - he has chirps, yowls, mews, and oh man can he purr.
It's kinda fun. He has no stealth ability - any prey could hear him coming.
But you know when you are a pet parent and you just wish there was a magic sound that would tell you that hey this noise you need to take seriously, the rest is just normal chit chat.
We have only been together for 6 wks - I look forward to learning all his noises.

(26,249 posts)She'd follow me down the hallway, meowing. Sit on my lap and meow. Always had something to tell me. Now she's settled into mainly meowing to wake me up, in the morning, and for a few casual conversations, though out the day. Or, and to alert me to the fact that she has found and killed another pair of socks, before they could attack me.

(22,005 posts)Mostly. He showed up at my barn one day when I was still in Calif. We bonded almost immediately.
He is at his loudest and most persistent when he's ready to go to bed and I'm not. Follows me around yowling. He wants to get under the covers and snuggle.

(46,023 posts)I guessed as much. Just like my former kitty. Best cat I ever had. Talked all the time.
Whenever I got home from a trip, he'd read me the riot act for being gone even though my hubby fed him while I was gone.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,587 posts)with big ears, a pointy nose and a long whippy tail - typical Siamese body. And a voice that could curdle gin. But noisiness isn't exclusive to Siamese cats. The cat who is actually part Siamese is very fluffy and stocky and mostly creamy-white, but she has blue, slightly crossed eyes and dark brown ears and tail (her only Siamese traits). But she's the one who trills and hums; her voice is not Siamese-y at all.

(14,487 posts)Then I realized that he always did it several times before he pounced on of of his housemates. So I think it's "I'M BORED! SOMEBODY PLAY WITH ME! HMMPH! I'LL SHOW YOU FOR IGNORING ME!" *POUNCE*

nadine_mn
(3,702 posts)Wants to make sure you paint him in a good light. Maybe he likes the food you gave him and is bragging. Our first cat Scout would get hard core kitty zooms even through his teen years after a tasty meal.
Charlie's stealth game is just sad - he meows loudly and his pre-pounce butt wiggle is very exaggerated.

(21,055 posts)She tells us at exactly 5 pm it is time to feed her. Then she will demand we feed her cookies. If she wants to play she will will meow In a certain way. The other day I was I the kitchen and my husband was brushing her I came into the room and she meowed at me as if to say, "go leave us alone". I was laughing at that! Cats "train us" by meowing their wants and desires!

I was reading the newspaper and she jumped up on my paper and meowed at me,"pay attention to me".

(21,055 posts)Does your cat have a v neck? Our cats look similar. Mine has brown hair with a black tail. Tasha was given to me by my best friend who had to give up one of her cats and knew I was thinking about getting another cat. She is 11 now.

(111,141 posts)He'll settle down a bit after his second birthday but he'll still most likely be a talker.
Factoid: cats in feral or semi feral situations don't meow. That's a noise they've developed specifically to communicate with humans, so he really is trying to tell you something when he's being talkative.
With that mustache, you missed a great opportunity. You should have named him Groucho.
nadine_mn
(3,702 posts)He was a lone kitty for awhile before he was surrendered to a rescue. My vet said that he was only recently neutered (at a least a year) so he was briefly all man (we were joking about the size of his paws). The fact that they can tell when neutered by the size of the head and muscle structure is so cool.
I look forward to figuring out all he has to say!

(11,686 posts)He meows about everything. I mean everything as in he meows to let me know he is about to use the pan. He is a very healthy kitty and very loving. His odd behavior is that EVERYTHING must be on his terms only. If I go up and pet him he walks away or holds my hands still with his paws. He does not like being picked up. He is a big time lap cat and loves to cuddle and puts his paws on you to get pet but you can not initiate it.
Marthe48
(16,898 posts)who is the best non-talking communicator I've ever seen. When I get up in the morning, he opens all the cupboard doors, so I can find his food. Then he slaps his dish until I feed him. Through the day, if I don't feed him on time, he slaps the dish. If I drop something on the floor, he tracks it and stares back and forth between it and me until I pick it up. If there is something on the floor that shouldn't be there, he stares at it and me until I realize I need to pick it up. He does other things too and we understand each other. I've heard that Siamese are talky. Hope it doesn't get tiresome for you.

(3,702 posts)Was when Charlie would hiss and growl at them his first 2 weeks (while he was establishing his turf and figuring them out).
Now he is pretty quiet - but he does enjoy resting next to them. I am amazed at how quickly he realized the dogs were not a threat to him.
