He is probably up to eight or ten by now. Actually, he loves all chords. Does anyone have a non-punishing technic to distract him, retrain him or make the cords unattractive to him? I tried peppermint oil but that only lasted for just a few days

(8,000 posts)It's bitter tasting to the dog but won't hurt them. They won't normally chew on anything that it's on. It's called Bitter Apple for Dogs and is available at Chewy.com It may also be at PetSmart and Petco.

(7,528 posts)He has to strategically arrange and enclose them in a tough plastic spiral tube to protect the wires and her from getting electrocuted.
A stronger dog might be able to chew this, but keeping them along the wall behind furniture or using a "gutter" type cover or "speedbump" type protector may be in order.
There's also a nasty-smelling bitter citrus spray that is supposed to be repellent to pets. Thing is, it smells pungently of bitter citrus. I'd not want to put that directly on cords, but with the cords protected by the covers that might be the way to go, so after your dog leaves them alone, you won't have cords that all smell like that.
(Sorry, this is bitter apple, I'd assume it's similar to the citrus spray I've experienced.)

(51,590 posts)My dog chewed through the cord on her heating pad (she was a puppy and just had surgery) and she electrocuted herself. I couldn't even pry her jaws open since she was in rigemortus sort of. I had to unplug it from the wall to stop the current. She was OK but it took me a long time to recover.

(2,860 posts)Kong makes toys that you can fill with peanut butter or dog treats. You can fill them up and put them in the freezer, but your dog will love them. You can also get butcher bones. I used to only give my dogs the Kong toys when it was time to be in the crate for the night. This would make them happy to go in the crate too. You just have to find something good that your dog really likes and they'll forget all about the chords etc. Puppies are like little kids you have to watch them all the time. I know it's really hard to do that, so I recommend crate training. This way if you need to concentrate on something else, or just watch a TV show, you can put your pup in a crate with their favorite toy and everyone is happy. This also helps with potty training too. Good luck with your pup!
