Related: About this forumAnyone have experience with an auricular hematoma?
Yesterday I realized one of my dog's outer ears is puffy and tender. No damage or ear infection. Going to the vet in an hour.

(28,813 posts)The vet will have to put the boy under and there will be scars on his beautiful ears. Sigh.
Have to keep the ears extra clean.

(12,646 posts)She got into something that irritated her ear and just kept scratching at it - which made it worse, causing the hematoma which had swollen up enough to block her ear passage.
She hated to cone of shame she had to wear for a month, and hated the medicine that went on her ear.

(24,761 posts)I had to take him to the vet and have his earlobe drained, along with stitches on his ear.
I still remember him taking off the bandage on his ear, so he had to have his entire head wrapped in bandage--which he soon "freed."

(16,829 posts)so yesterday I called the vet. Now he's on steroids for a few weeks. It will make him drink and pee a lot. But I am hoping to avoid surgery and the risk of infection.
She also prescribed Tramadol for pain.

(16,829 posts)The hematoma has completely disappeared and he had no ill effects from the treatment. The side effects - lots of eating, drinking, peeing, and pooing - meant I had to take a lot of extra trips outside. But I'm glad we avoided the surgery route and the risk of infection.
