Related: About this forumOur marvelous, handsome and giant hearted guy crossed over yesterday.
Galen was 12.5 years old this month, we knew he was dying, and after a bad 3 days this week, we managed to get thru the bitter cold, snow and ice to the vet's. He slipped away, looking me in the eye as I held him.
I know all of you guys understand why it is so damn hard to do the right thing. My heart is shattered.

We have a 12 yr old Aussie Boy with diabetes and as a result is going blind. I dread the day will come.
We lost his brother when he was 8, he left very unexpectedly from a bursted slpeen that we didn't even know about
Bless their hearts, they are truly the best of us

w/them and then say BTW can you bring you dog too? He was a spectacular
dog. If and when you get a new best buddy I am sure Galen has made sure that
he made sure that you have room in your heart for a new best buddy.
I bet your boy could make you pat him by just flipping your hand on his head.
BTW my lab is like your Galen .... he thinks he can control me w/his eyes. "OK
you can come with me today."

(15,241 posts)There is the utter truth and love that our real friends give us, and that we give them.
I don't want to count the number of these friends that have passed but I can remember each of their names and their special (and some not so special) qualities.
As I'm aging I'll probably stop subjecting my friends to my debilities but I will always love them, and others, and yours - dixiegrrrrl.

(9,535 posts)She had been moving slowly, sick for a day and then fell on stairs and came up lame as we were on the way to the vet. They found,a ruptured tendon but also cancer in all of her organs. I held her when they had to put her down, hardest thing I've ever done and cried like a baby.
A few months later we adopted a rescue golden who looks much the same, and it helped to heal our hearts. Each dog is different, but filling that gaping void with love for a new animal really is the best medicine.
Actually we now have two dogs, having since adopted a rescue husky, too, and they are now the best of friends (after a someone rocky start).
((Hugs))

(51,590 posts)I know the pain you feel. Two days ago Chelsea Handler lost her best friend too. I have been hearing about so many losses in the past few months and it seems odd to me. I remember when Fran Dresher's dogs and Mickey Rourke's dogs passed away and how I felt knowing someone understands how I feel too. It is such severe pain to experience and I have 100% empathy with you. My best friend is almost 15 and I dread it but I appreciate that I will live long enough to take care of her and provide the best life until it happens. That is a good thing. She wouldn't be able to live without me.

(60,010 posts)At night he would be dozing near me while I was on the puter, and let out a moan-ish sound, we called his whale music. I would repeat the sound back to him, he would reply, we would create different pitches, vary the length, back and forth for minutes at a time. He would end the game by breaking into a long howl, head up, then stop and look at me , and GRIN., tail wagging, happy as hell. You know how Goldies smile.....

(5,602 posts)I swore I would never get another dog after losing Murphy in 2013. That oath lasted all of two days, until I went to the Oregon Humane Society shelter, and met Joey the Jack Russell Terrier. Joey is laying at my feet as I type this.
