My best cat ever, Nigel, would also do that with peanut butter. And he'd fall for it every time. If you were making a sandwich, he was sure he wanted some. You hold the butter knife down with some on it, and he'd gag. It was hysterical.

They do hate the smell of fingernail polish, I learned.

Sometimes you can entertain cats or dogs by opening up various spice bottles and letting them inhale the fumes!
They can get very curious.
