My good deed (I hope) for the day - yesterday.

I was on my way to my car in the parking lot of one of the local grocery stores yesterday when I saw a dog left alone in a car. Really hot day yesterday, near 90 degrees by 11:00 AM and humidity at least 80%. Windows cracked and the dog looked OK. I waited a few minutes to see if the dumbass owner would show up. Nope.

I took down the license number and went to the customer service desk in the store. They were sympathetic but said there wasn't anything they were legally allowed to do. I asked if they might at least make an announcement over their PA system, which they were willing to do.

I went back out, and watched for several minutes. I was several parking places away. Nothing for several more minutes. I felt I had waited long enough, so I called our local police department. I was determined to wait until either the owner or the police showed up. I was in the process of giving the info to the desk officer when the owner, a woman, showed up and drove off. I hope she was going to go straight home. Poor dog.

I was torn between parking closer so I could say something to the idiot owner when she appeared, and being too chicken to do so because you never know who might be packing heat.

That states if you see an animal in distress because of being in a hot car, you can break out the window of the car and will not face charges nor can the owner of the car sue you for damages.

I have always carried one of those safety glass hammers with a seat belt cutter on the other end. I won't hesitate to use it if the animal is suffering. I would definitely speak out to anyone that leaves their animal in a hot car. I will speak up for the ones that can't speak for themselves.
