Related: About this forumCostco dog food under "precautionary" recall.
We got a recorded call from Costco recalling our last 50lb bag of their dog food. They say there is no known problems with it but it was produced by the same company, Diamond, that now has a recall underway for their salmonella tainted products.
I am guessing they are able to track our purchases and used that ability contact us. We were told to bring back the unused food for a refund. We always put the food in a big plastic tub and throw the bag away. We told them that but they said to still bring it in in a plastic bag. Whatever.
The dogs have been eating this for more than a week. We obviously had to handle it, too. No one is sick so there's no reason to think our bag of food was tainted.

(67,781 posts)As stated in the OP, when we got the phone call telling us about the recall, the dogs were already most of the way through the 40 lb bag. Today we returned the food. Costco gave us a cash refund and no hassle whatsoever. They just checked our our purchase history on their computer and that was that. Very easy.
The food was probably okay because neither we nor the dogs had a moment of being ill.

(16,334 posts)we put ours in a big bin as well and they were mostly through with it. We got the recall call at precisely the time we planned to go buy more food. When we went to the store, they had one bag left of the healthy weight formula and said that version was not part of the recall so we bought it.
When I saw the news story, they stated they never actually found anything in the recalled brands. They just happened to be the common factor among the people who got sick. But it's great that Costco didn't take any chances.

(8,339 posts)The bacteria in question, Salmonella Infantis, was found in the food and in stool samples from the people who got sick. The bacteria in the people is a genetic match to the bacteria in teh dog food.
And watch out for cross-contamination. Animals don't get food poisoning the way people do. They can contract Salmonella and never show any symptoms, but shed the bacteria in their feces. And the bacteria can get on their coats and in their mouths; pet them and touch your mouth, and you can get sick. It takes just a few bacteria to make someone very, very sick. Sixteen people are sick because of that dog food, and the Diamond pet food plant was cited for filthy conditions and violations of food safety laws.

(11,065 posts)I never remember this sort of thing happening when I was young. Seems to me any food recall was aways such a big deal because it was so rare. Now it's every damn time you turn around another recall! I'm sticking with the small companies anymore. I swear it's these giant companies that can't seem to get with it on quality control or they just plain don't care. Seems to me companies used to actually care about their products and were mortified and in terror of the business collapsing because of it if they had to do a recall, but now a days it seems like woopdie do, so what if our products make people or their pets sick or die - just part of doing business. It really pisses me off, and you can't seem to rely on anything you put in yourself or your pets anymore.
