I have a bit of advice for dog (and cat) lovers ... check out Dog Food Advisor

https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/

It's mostly about dog food but the same principles apply to cat foods. The guy who does the reviews is VERY knowledgeable and explains things well. You'll learn a TON about how to read a pet food label, what constitutes quality ingredients, and what constitutes cheap, toxic CRAP. Start out by looking up what you now feed your pet. Should be able to find something in the same 'line', even if it's not the same 'flavor'.

You'll be amazed to find that there's some brands out there that call themselves 'Premium' and charge Premium prices ... but are actually barely better than Purina Chow (cough ... Royal Canin ... cough ... Science Diet).

First, most surprising fact you might learn? 'REAL (MEAT) IS FIRST INGREDIENT!' ... is not actually a mark of a good food (though it still may be, depends what else is there).

REAL (MEAT) MEAL is actually much better.

And that's just the start

Not affiliated in ANY way, I just learned so much from that site.

I've been using Dog Food Advisor for years. When, on a recent visit, our vet told us that one of our dogs needed to lose weight, he tried to sell us on one of those mentioned above. We declined, went home, went to Chewy (if you don't know Chewy, it is a GREAT place to get almost all things dogs & cats with good prices, fast shipping, and delivered right to your door chewy.com), checked their low-cal dog foods and then checked with Dog Food Advisor. Found a brand we had never heard of, with lower calories and a higher rating than our Vet's. Needless to say, we've been feeding it ever since.

I have been shopping with them a few years or so now. A year or so ago, I noticed they had an option to add pet profiles, and if you included info on health issues age, weight, etc, you would get automatic suggestions for products. I made profiles for 3 of my kitties who had health issues, to see how those recommendations worked.

In November 2018, I had to say goodbye to my beloved Jennings - the one furkid I'd been most bonded with in my life. One month to the day I'd let him go, I found that Chewy had randomly selected me to receive a hand-painted pet portrait based on the profile picture I had uploaded. I treasure that portrait.

I was already a fan because of the selection and outstanding customer service. But that beautiful portrait made me a customer for life, and outright Chewy evangelist!

The artist even got the freckle on his wittle nose! <3

She is a female Lhasa Apso weighs 10 lbs. Never had to go to a vet because she was never sick!
I made sure she got plenty of exercise and have fed her Purina One dry dog food all her life.
She has no pains or bad joints. I know this because when she gets a whole body massage, she does not whimper.

The most important thing I have done for this pet is to brush her teeth every other day with a soft tooth brush and water only, no toothpaste. Her gums and teeth at near age 15 are still in great shape. In my theory, dogs teeth accumulate tartar over the years which leads to receding gums which causes bacteria to grow in their mouths. These same bacteria will move on to attack kidneys and heart. Typical symptom of gum disease is bad breath. My dog has no such problem. I never use those products which supposedly clean their teeth. Nothing beats brushing with a toothbrush. Get started when they are puppies and they get used to it real quick.

I tried the grain free products for a short time, but saw no advantage except she pooped more.
With the Purina One products (meat/chicken first ingredient) her poop is well formed and small.

I expect this pet to make it to age 20 without ever needing to visit a vet.

and attention, which you've clearly given in spades

To be clear, 'first ingredient is (MEAT)' is not necessarily 'bad', it's just not necessarily 'good' either. Reason has to do with how ingredients are ordered by 'weight', and that's weight BEFORE ... the food goes into the dryer. Chicken Meal is already dry, and has 3x the protein of 'REAL CHICKEN'. So Chicken Meal as your first ingredient is actually much better than Real Chicken, because it's already dry (unlike real chicken which is mostly water), and what's 'first' is based on weight. Make sense?

I'm not calling anyone negligent or saying if you're not buying the 5-star food your pet will die young or anything, just saying the site's a good resource for getting both your money's worth, and what's scientifically likely to be most nutritious to your little Loved One(s)

It''s always a bit of a crapshoot ... everyone has a 'Old Uncle Joe' who lived to be 95, smoking cigars, drinking bourbon, and flirting with the young ladies ... in their family, after all

For my current doggie, I should continue her Purina one lamb & rice dry food because she has done well so far and she eats it with gusto. If ain't broke don't fix it haha.
Should I get a new dog someday and could run into health issues, and in that situation great to know which dog foods are better.

Lots of good information. I was surprised to find that some of the very pricey dog foods weren't necessarily the best. And some modestly priced foods are average or better. So people on a budget CAN buy good healthy foods for their pets that aren't filled with a lot of chemicals and fillers.

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of everyone. It's a great site.

And the more you know, science-wise, the better equipped one can be to see through marketing nonsense.

Thank DOG for the LIBERALS in US History who insisted on some semblance on proper product ingredient labeling. One of 'our' greatest ideas, very literally

Cats mostly just need a bit higher protein % in their food than dogs, really. They're slightly less omnivorous and more carnivorous. But the same stuff that's crap ingredients for doggos ... are crap ingredients for Kittehs, and probably more so

I hope catfoodadvisor also becomes the same awesome resource ... given that since my wife left with our dogs ... I'm now only a cat owner ...
