The Banzhof family of Temperance, Michigan, had a lot to celebrate on April 17, as their son Gabe and their dog Cupid were officially adopted on the same day.
Gabe Banzhof, 10, was adopted by his stepdad Thomas Banzhof before heading over to Lucas County Canine Care & Control to bring home his pup.
"We were all bawling," mom Jessica Banzhof told "Good Morning America." "Thomas and I have been together for 7 years and from the start he and Gabe instantly bonded. That was his son. You couldn't tell him anything else. The adoption just sealed the deal."

(9,170 posts)At the last minute, her birth father balked, so we didn't move forward with the adoption. When she was 14 she asked if she could change her name. We asked if she really wanted to do that, and she replied that she really wanted to be adopted, but since that couldn't happen, she wanted to change her last name to mine.
By that time I was an attorney, did the research and found that (1) she could change her name at 14 without parental consent, and (2) I could adopt if her birth father agreed to terminate his parental rights. Faced with the fact that she would no longer bear his name in any case, he agreed, and I adopted Jen exactly 30 years and one month ago.
Oh, and we already got the dog for her 14th birthday.
