Sat Aug 24, 2019, 08:51 PM

A few hours ago, I had to ease my beautiful cat boy over the Rainbow Bridge.

A week ago, tonight, he seemed a little stand-offish and only ate about half his dinner. On Sunday, he refused to come on the back porch to eat, so I brought him inside and decided to take him to the vet for a check. He was his typical self; yelling loudly and banging against the bedroom door to be freed. We saw the vet Monday afternoon and they discovered he had a high fever. Did blood work and saw nothing out of line. So, they gave him a steroid shot and put him on antibiotics.

Things were good that evening and Tuesday. He didn't feel as warm and he was eating about 50% of his meals. Wednesday, he got quieter and made a hideout under the bed. He still liked to be held and purred loudly. But he stopped eating. Thursday was the same, so I called an made an appointment for 8AM, Friday.

His temperature was 103. More blood tests still showed nothing abnormal. Test for FIV came back negative. They gave him liquids, another steroid shot, and added take home prednisone and a second antibiotic. I got about 2 Tablespoons of chicken baby food down him via syringe.

Today, at around 3, he suddenly cried out and I recognized pain in that. I immediately rushed to our emergency clinic about 15 miles away. They put him on oxygen and IV and then the doctor told me the worse. His temp was down to 98 degrees and he was 'crashing'. His organs were shutting down. The doctor said he wouldn't live another 2 hours. They suspected it was Bobcat Fever and he had almost 0% of recovery even though they worked up a $1500 medical estimate to try and save him.

I went into shock. I had to get my ex-DIL on the phone to help me through. I knew I had to release my sweet boy from pain. It was all horrible. To have a healthy cat lose 1/3 of his weight in 6 days and go into lung and heart failure, seems like a bad dream.

Mellow (officially, Marshmellow) showed up one day at my house in April 2009. I was just going through my radiation treatment for my Stage IV tonsil cancer. He stayed. He was semi feral not liking anyone new to be around. But he would roll over on his back for tummy rubs and ear scratches when he saw me. And boy could he purr. The last purrs I heard were at 12:30 this afternoon. The other 3 abandoned cats took to him and my little colony of ferals was registered with the city. All were neutered and vaccinated. I'm now down to 2. My oldest was killed by a dog running loose in July 2015.

I think I'm rambling. I just want you to know I loved Mellow and my heart is broken.

1. I'm so sorry, sinkingfeeling.

Mellow is free from pain now, and you did all that you could for him. Such a tragedy to go down so fast.

2. so sorry, sinkingfeeling

it's the price of love

Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you -

I loved you so -
'twas Heaven here with you

3. So sorry

It's so hard, so painful, so searing. I lost 3 fur family members since December. It has been a terrible year for us. I am underwater with vet bills and still feeling the deep sense of loss.
There was nothing you could do. It was his time to cross.

"Weep not those of you who loved me, for I do not exist in this form alone. I race unchecked in every splash of sun and pass by when breezes sigh. Weep not; for your tears will block from your ears, the subtle new sound of my call"

5. You did the right thing

Btw the more you loved a person or a pet the more it hurts.

I had to do the same thing September 1, 2018 with my lab you can not let them suffer.

I'm glad he healed you for all those years he spent with you. Now he can watch over you all the time. Those lovely flame point kitties are such compassionate nurses. Thank you for all the years you cared for him and made his life good.

9. Condolences on your loss.

Letting our furry kids go a couple of years ago (after 18 and 19 years) was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do.

17. So many of us have experienced your sorrow.

But as I sat in the waiting room waiting for the vet's signal to come in..
I couldn't stop crying..I looked across the waiting room and an older man looked at me and said " Your dog was probably one of the most important relationships you'll ever experience... many don't experience the type of relationship you had"
He was so right!!

and I feel as bad for you & your kitty as I did when I lost Rocky. The tears will stop in time, but the feeling will always be there. I get some comfort in knowing our fur kids will be waiting for us and we'll all play together some day.

32. What a beauty! So difficult when you don't have time to work through accepting what must come.

Mellow was so lucky to have stumbled into your yard nine years ago. He had a good life and you're to thank for that. If you want to see him again someday, you can. This is just a temporary separation. Remember him with happiness for all the days he graced your life, not sadness. So sorry for this loss.

33. You will see him again. He will be waiting for you in Heaven.

And watch out for him to come "visiting" you sometimes, watch for the feeling of him lying beside you and the sensation of his fur rubbing against a leg.

Please also remember that God loves Mellow too and would never take him away from you forever. There's a special place in Heaven where our pets go and have a wonderful time while they're waiting for us. And when you pass over, he will be the first one running out to greet you. Love never dies.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

40. I understand.

It is always heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet, it is not only heartbreaking but devastating to lose one with almost no advance warning. I know, I've been there as well. We had a healthy, middle-aged dog who was apparently healthy one day, and gone the next. We were 2000 miles from home for my dad's 90th birthday. I don't remember anything about the drive back home other than a blur and having to pull off the road periodically to break into sobs.

All I can say is I know that Mellow took a piece of your heart with him when he left. I promise you that in time you will discover that he left a piece of his with you when he left as well.

Do the best we can to give em a loving and good life. Letting them go is the hard part that I'll never get used to. I'm with you, sinkingfeeling, and all of you who know this pain.

I like to think of my sweet boy, Elbee, showing Mellow the best lounging limbs and spots under the neighboring houses. ❤️
