Related: About this forumDoes my dog think she has been on a trip? I've always heard that dogs don't
have a sense of time, but is that true for distance?
She goes with me to move the car - about 50 feet. It takes maybe 2 minutes. When she gets out of the car, she barks and runs excitedly in circles as if announcing "I've been on a trip. I've been on a trip."
It is so cute but puzzling??

When I moved, that's how I kept her out of the way. I parked the car at the end of the driveway, she sat in the car looking around, and at the end of the day was as happy as if she'd been on a all day trip. But all she really did was watch everything

(17,862 posts)I honestly think dogs do have a sense of time and consciousness. For example my dog does not pattern walk. I have three basic variants when I first start to walk. He changes it up all the time even in some cases refusing one direction to go another. He also knows that car rides can also lead to walks in more interesting directions, and he sometimes demands we take the car.
Both my dogs associated events with tasks. For example my wife drives me to and from work. The dogs always want to go along. They feel offended if one is left behind (still asleep upstairs).

(2,860 posts)My 14 year old mutt was very upset on Monday when his dinner came an hour late due to the time change. I have had the power go out in the past and my dogs would always wake me up on time. Time is relative though and since their lives are so short compared to ours, they're not good at waiting. As for the car rides, most of my dogs loved the car because they always associated it with going to the dog park. Some dogs hate the car because the only place they ever go in it is to the vet. I had one dog that loved the car so much he would jump into the drivers seat and put his paws on the steering wheel if I left the door open.
