Doggie pool party at my house is also snack time!

For some reason they never pee in the pool. I don't know why...I doubt they are observing the social niceties! (Especially Robbie who is my nature boy and middle child)

They prefer the pool water to what's in the bowl and even what comes out of the bathtub faucet. So far neither of them are very keen on going in though. Boo wanted to and he'd get to the top of the steps and then chicken out before starting on the in-the-pool steps. I think it's because visually you can't tell depth underwater, and he wasn't sure how far away the first step was. Yoshi did the same thing last year, but I didn't get him until September and the pool was taken down after he was here for only about a week.

I'm trying to figure out how to convince Yoshi to get in the pool because I think he'd love it. He loves the bathtub and creeks and rivers and giant puddles, but just like Boo was, he's chicken to step down on that first in-the-pool step.

Hopefully, I'll be setting up my pool today. I wanted to do it over the weekend, but it was just to hot and humid to be outside for more than a few seconds, so Yoshi and I hung out in here all day... me working on the 'puter and refinishing my dining room chairs and him snoring the plaster off the ceiling.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with him while I'm setting up the pool. He gets right smack in the middle of whatever I'm doing, and I don't want him running around tearing the liner with his nails and getting all in the way, but he won't want to be stuck inside missing all the fun either. Maybe I could tie him to the tree so he can watch and be outside but not get in the way and make a tattered mess of my pool.

By the way... I always pee in my pool. It's MY pool, so I can pee in it if I want to! LOL! Ok, no, I don't make a habit of peeing in the pool for real. But last year when I had the pH problem it cleared right up after I accidentally weewee'd in the pool... wasn't my fault - Lisa said something hilarious and I had drunk all that iced-tea. So really, it's Lisa's fault. We'll blame her.

I wonder what it is though about the pee that fixed the pH problem? I'm going to keep that in mind if it happens again this year before messing for weeks with all the chemicals that didn't do a damn thing to fix it.

I might as well pee in a bucket! No fair that you have a pool big enough to sit in let alone pee in!

Maybe you could send Yoshi off on a Spa Day like they do on HGTV!

It's only and eight footer since I have such a small yard and it has to be on a perfectly flat surface, but I love, love, love it! It and the filter were only about $50 at Amazon. The filter works really well and you really only have to just hose off the filter cartridge with a garden hose once in awhile and keep reusing it. I also put foam insulation boards under it to make it cushiony on the bottom of the pool and they make getting the wrinkles out when you fill it up easy as pie. I built outside the pool steps for it out of stacked cinderblocks and the inside the pool steps opposite is just a two-step utility stair I got for about $10 at Home Depot. I had to tie a brick to the bottom of the first step on the underside so it wouldn't float though. You can buy a ladder for the pool, but it cost more than the whole pool and filter set up, so I worked out the idea for the steps, and I like them better anyway. I often sit on the inside the pool steps halfway in the water reading a book because if I sit on the bottom of the pool the water is up to my neck. I did end up getting the stronger filter for it last year (only about ten dollars more and looks and acts exactly the same) because the pool is shaded by part of the tree, and all kinds of crap was falling from the tree into the pool putting a strain on the filter... and the squirrels and birds were always chucking stuff out of their nests into my pool. They moved out of my tree for some reason (probably Yoshi) last fall and no critters are living in it now. I don't miss them... nothing like bird crap all over your pool cover to clean off every morning.

If you have the room you should think about getting one. They're easy as hell to set up and maintain all summer, and even my little one is a joy. Mine is the eight footer and looks like this. The 10, 12 and a little higher foot ones look the same but are just bigger...

12. definitely get the stronger filter for the 8 footer pool

The one that it comes with if you buy the pool and filter as a set is strong but not strong enough to get the bugs that commit suicide in the pool and the bigger types of dirt or sand granuals that settle at the bottom. The stronger filter looks and acts exactly the same but it just has a stronger motor in it so it filters more water faster and harder, and it's only about $10 more. I was never able to find the 8 footer in the stores because since they started making the 10 foot one people wanted that one because the 12 foot one was just a little too big, so the stores all decided to ditch the 8 ft. pool in favor of the 10 ft. one. I would have loved to have had the 10 foot one, but there's a cement walkway from the back door to the gate that cuts right across the damn center of the lawn and it's a goof four inches higher than the lawn. The ten foot pool would have had to go partway onto that walkway, but the 8 foot one fits perfectly in it's little space. You can get the 8 foot one anywhere online though and they're pretty popular for us folks that only have a bitty little grassy enclosure we like to call a lawn. A lot of people even use them at ground floor apartments that have a good sized patio that goes with their unit.

You can get the pool and various sized filters on Amazon either as a set or the pool and whatever filter you want separately. My pool only uses a miniscule amount of chlorine to stay sparkling clean, and I almost never have to do any shock treatments even though I have that damn tree hanging partway over the pool dropping all kinds of crap in all the time. You can get the cartidges for the filter at any pool supply place, and they probably have them at a lot of big box stores now, too. The filter comes with one cartridge already in it, but it's nice to have two in case something happens to one of them. They're only a couple of bucks anyway. About every week or so you need to take it out and give it a good hosing down with the garden hose or even in the kitchen sink to clean it and then just pop it back in. They clean up really well that way. I have one cartidge that I'm still using for three summers now and it's fine.

Make sure you get the Intex brand. There's several imitation pools that ripped them off but they SUCK. The filters are about as big as my fist and wouldn't filter the toilet bowl. The vinyl they're made of is thin and cheap, and I wouldn't trust it to last a month much less a whole summer. One of my neighbors got one of the imitation one last summer and it didn't last a week before one of the seams burst and all that water made a horrible mess and destroyed their vegetable garden. Damn piece of junk cost exactly the same as the Intex pool, too.

The only thing you CAN't skimp on is you HAVE to have the pool on a perfectly flat area. Since it's basically a bag, it isn't designed to withhold the stress if it lists even a little bit to one side and the seems will start leaking and eventually burst. I had to use the shovel and do a little digging in my yard and testing with a carpenter's level to make a totally flat area in my yard, but it was definitely worth it. There was only one exact spot in the yard the pool could go, so I didn't have the option of seeking out a perfectly flat space.

You probably would also want to use the insulation foam boards underneath to make it more comfortable to sit on the bottom of the pool and also to protect the bottom of the pool. I found out by accident that they also make getting the wrinkles out of the liner easy as hell even when it's just me setting it up my myself. I use four 8' x 2' insulation boards an inch thick that I got at Home Depot and they're only a few bucks a piece. That makes a perfect eight foot square space for the pool to sit on.

It's REALLY easy to set up. I was a little worried about that because I'm always a dunce at trying to figure out parts and intructions and get anything put together right. But I had no problem at all and it only took about an hour.

I just set mine up for the summer this afternoon. Yoshi has no idea what to make of it even though the first week I had him it was still set up at the end of the summer. I guess he doesn't remember it. He's been circling around and arounding it now for ages trying to figure out how to get in. I'm hoping that if I show him how to use the steps he'll want to come in eventually.

You will LOVE your little pool! I didn't think it would be that big of a deal since it's so small, but I couldn't imagine summer now without it. It's so wonderfully relaxing, and I spend an incredible amount of time every day in it. Very often I jump in it late at night and just float around looking up at the stars. A few times after walking the dog when it was steamy hot and humid I throw myself in fully clothed because I was so sticky and uncomfortable.... aaaaahhhhhhhhh! Instant relief!

Ooooo! I just found the 8 ft. pool by itself (without the filter) on a really great sale at Amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/Intex-Easy-Set-Pool-30/dp/B0009PU0UQ/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1338503723&sr=8-10

Amazon also has the separate filter that's even a little stronger than the one I got but at the sale price this one is even less expensive than mine was...
http://www.amazon.com/Intex-Krystal-56637E-000-Gallon-Filter/dp/B0013FG2DA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1338504109&sr=8-2

I'd definitely get that one. Hell, I think I'll get that one, too, especially if I can get Yoshi to come in the pool... with all his hair and muddy feet it would be a good idea for me.

for a few weeks. My brother is on a family vacation and he is the one person in the family in charge of doing things correctly. He will read the directions, read your advise and everything will be done exactly right in the shortest amount of time. I will assist.

While I am waiting I will choose a spot for it. I have several in mind. This is a great project! Not a lot of money and plenty of bang for my buck.

I've been thinking of getting a pool for the back part of my yard but I can't decide if it's worth the work and money. This will be a great test run! Maybe this is all I really want.

But damn, you are right, it IS your pool and you can do whatever you want in it. Just don't invite me over for a pool party, OK.

As to how to get the dog in the pool, I would try picking him up and carrying him in the first time. Or is there room for you to stand on the first step with the dog? He may be willing to step down if he sees you standing there. Good luck.

16. I purposely tell everyone I pee in the pool

so they won't want to always come over to use it... I like using the pool to relax, and some people are anything but relaxing to be with in a pool. Besides, I have a horror that THEY might pee in it! LOL!

It would be really nice if I could pick Yoshi up and carry him in, but he weighs more than I do, so that's probably not going to work out. LOL! He's a really big boy. When he's up on his hind legs we're about eyeball to eyeball.

He's definitely interested in going in, but I think he just needs some coaxing to take that first step down into the water onto the inside-the-pool steps. If I can just get him to use the steps one time I think he'll be fine after that, but it's that first time that might not be so easy. I'm pretty sure that once he realizes how the steps work and he can stand on the bottom of the pool and still have his head out of the water he'll really like it. It took a lot of coaxing and time to encourage him to go all the way into the bathtub when it was full of water, too. Actually, I kind of wish now that I hadn't encouraged him to be ok with that because now it's really hard to take a bath by myself, and there sure as heck isn't room enough in the tubby for both of us.

Huh, now I'm kind of wondering if I really want him to like the pool because I'll probably never again be able to be in it by myself just just relaxing like the bathtub... he doesn't do water to relax but to play. I can just see us in there with me trying to relax and float around and him leaping around like a loon... "Yeah, we're playin' and swimmin'! (Me: you're playin' and swimmin' but your drowning me). LOL!

Don't get the dog in the pool! I cannot imagine what bath time is like for you these days.

But if you are still crazy enough to want Yoshi in the pool, maybe you could try teaching him to go up and down the steps with them set up outside of the pool first, like you see in those competitions where dogs go up and down obstacles???? Then at least the fear would be gone of the steps.

Just remember, I am on the side of "don't get the dog in the pool", and just enjoy your relaxation time. Don't blame me if that works.

His tail waves like a flag almost, and he does that cute little butt wiggle just before the ball gets launched.

I can see why you kept him. Well, how could you not? I mean, just look at him! He's so adorable!

If I only could I'd fill the house with so many dogs I'd have to set up a tent in the yard for me to sleep in. I'll probably end up the Crazy Dog Lady when I get old. You know the type... is constantly surrounded by dogs and has intimate involved conversations with them but barely acknowledges people. That'll be me. LOL!
