Related: About this forumSomebody apparently abandoned a dog at the dog park.
She came up to me as I was getting close to the gate to leave - looked like a cattle dog /aussie mix. Very friendly. Collar but no tags. Another person asked me if it was my dog or I knew whose it was, but I did not. She said the dog had been hanging around the gate for more than 45 minutes. Its about 30 degrees today.
She tried to put the dog on a leash so she could take her around the park, but the dog wanted to stay near the gate. The other person was prepared to take responsibility for it, so I left.
I understand that sometimes people have to give up pets, but leaving a dog out in the cold by herself is just cruel.

(7,413 posts)Elevator version....my DH and I saw a cute little stray - hung around -no one came - a Chicago cop cruised by and we told him about it and he said he would take it to the station and was sure someone would adopt it - we called after a few days to see what happened - they left it at the local kill shelter. (!)
At that time they had one week there and then put them down. Her last chance for adoption was that weekend - huge snowstorm! We called near closing time - no adoption and Monday was kill day.
We drove there at closing time, adopted her, paid all the costs (I forgot - under $100.00) and drove her to the Anti Cruelty society - had to pay a drop off fee -both of us were in tears - she was so sweet.
We couldn't adopt her ourselves as we had a 2 room apt and 3 pets who already didn't get along.
Called the next day and were told she had been adopted by some older lady. Thank God - I don't know what we would have done next!
Sigh....never forgot little "Patsy" and her crazy wagging tail.

(17,863 posts)You are right. A dog is a lifetime commitment, and no dog should be abandoned. We have come across several strays in the neighborhood, and have been able to find their homes for some of them (I either walk around the neighborhood with a leash on them) or I sit out front with them while they are on a leash hoping the owner will drive by). The others we have had to call animal services to take them.
My beagle was with me to the end, and my current two dogs (14 and 12 - both adopted at a year old from the shelter) will be with me to the end as well.

(16,254 posts)Too bad the owner couldn't show as much compassion. Why do people get dogs if they can't care for them? Once the puppy stage is over, the fun apparently ends for them.

(17,086 posts)I think the person who left it wanted to abandon it in a "safe" space. It's very sad.

(16,829 posts)she was going to try to find the owner (its a huge park and sometimes dogs and owners do get separated) or take her if necessary.
But it was heartbreaking to see this sweet dog who was basically saying "I'm going to stay right here until my parents come back. I know they're coming back."
This would be an easy dog to rehome. I can't believe somebody would just dump her and drive away.

(2,471 posts)Long story short, the owner would drop the dog off on the way to work and then pick it up after work.
Luckily a neighbor of the guy was there and took control of the dog.
