I listened to this while my dog was dying last night, and several times today.

It seems to touch every aspect of loss, including letting go and moving on.

20. milestogo, this morning I happened upon the folder that has the photos of our dear boy

who we lost three years ago. I felt the pain immediately and was shocked at how sudden and strong it came back. I have two dogs at my feet right now but they can do nothing to lessen my sorrow over losing him.

The bonds we form with animals are different than those we make with other people, and in some ways might be even stronger - having cleared the hurdle of two species coming to understand one another, we are connecting at a different level. I wish you strength and courage as you negotiate this new world without your friend.

My last dog died on my bed in 2008 and it all came rushing back. I knew he was dying and I just held on to him. At that moment all you can do is be in the moment. And with sorrow, all you can do is lean into it... and know that it never really leaves you.
