Waiting for test results

Our current senior cat has lost a pound and a half since her last visit to the vet in July, so she had a blood test to see what’s up. I am so hoping for something easily treatable like hyperthyroidism. The worst possible result would be perfectly normal test results. I’ve been to that rodeo before—weight loss plus normal blood tests almost always means cancer.

Just last month I lost two cats. One died of simple old age at 20; the other died of cancer at 16. I’m not ready to lose another.

I hate that position. At least you can be there for each other.

My old cat started losing weight, turned out he was hyperthyroid. The vet prescribed thyroid tablets, which helped; he didn't gain back the weight he'd lost, but at least he didn't lose any more. He was fine for about six months, but then he did get cancer and he passed away in June. He was almost 17 so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised but it was hard to take anyhow. And another old cat (14) had just died suddenly a month before from an aortic thromboembolism. That was a tough one; he'd seemed fine but suddenly collapsed one evening; I rushed him to the emergency vet but there wasn't much they could do. They said he'd lost the use of his back legs and probably it would happen again even if he made it through the night. So I had to say goodbye to him too. I also have one left. She's a bit younger and still healthy but I know what you're dealing with. I hope your old girl will be fine.

Several years ago I had three cats. Shortly after one died (she was probably at least 16 or more years old but had been a stray so I never really knew) another cat got very sick and I thought I'd lose her also. I was a basket case for a few days. The sick cat recovered and was with me for a few more years.

I'm trying to say I more or less know what you're going through.

Millie has elevated eosinophils, which can be caused by a variety of things, including allergies and parasites. Considering her recent drastic weight loss, the most likely culprits seem to be inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. We’re going to treat her for inflammatory bowel disease and hope that’s the problem.
