Popular flea collar linked to almost 1,700 pet deaths. The EPA has issued no warning.

We all sneak our precious pups a snack from the dinner table every now and then, but some of those foods can be deadly.
PROBLEMSOLVED, USA TODAY
Rhonda Bomwell had never used a flea and tick collar before. Pierre, her 9-year-old Papillon service dog, was mostly an indoor animal.

Still, her veterinarian recommended she purchase one, so Bomwell went to the pet store near her home in Somerset, New Jersey, and selected Bayer’s Seresto collar.

A day later, on June 2, 2020, Pierre had a seizure, collapsing while Bomwell was making dinner. Lying on his back, the dog stopped breathing and his eyes rolled back.

More at link.

I literally just bought one of these yesterday. No choice because of the extreme flea problem where I live. Just a few days out of the deep freeze cold snap & dog had a bunch on him from brief potty runs.

Years ago, I gave a daily heartworm preventative pill at vet's suggestion. When someone at vet's office ordered monthly in error, I began using that at the appropriate dose & my precious sheltie princess began to have seizures. Another vet said likely the heartworm meds.

All that said, Shelties are rather fragile, prone to lots of health issues, as much as I love them.

Tough issue because fleas carry a lot of horrible diseases, too.

I will continue to use the Seresto collar becausd it works. I've tried all the holistic remedies, even the commercial ones, to no avail.

Damned fleas!

I hope your beloved Shelties never have this bad experience!

Our vet recommends Seresto collars, too, but man they can be expensive.

So far those liquid flea drops have worked pretty well on my Labs. We’ve never had flea problems but do find an occasional tick. Ticks were really bad here last summer and fall. We have 3 acres and a lot of shrubs and brush they get into. It’s an ongoing problem for us dog lovers, isn’t it?

Heart worm meds were making my Sophie throw up until we changed (lessened) the dosage. She is right at the lower end of the large dog weight class and the package recommended too much for her. We okayed this with our vet.

Good luck with your precious furry friends.

4. COUNTERFEIT SERESTO COLLARS (Seresto collars should have NO dates on the tin)

Statement from a veterinary clinic: "We have been seeing more counterfeit Seresto Collars this year than any other year. Most of these collars are bought online. Our first clue to a counterfeit Seresto Collar is clients saying it does NOT work and the pet has fleas. We can easily tell if the collar is counterfeit. Most of the counterfeit collars have an odor and/or the container looks like the labels are glued on. This collar below, we had a client bring in today, was the best counterfeit we have seen. We contacted Bayer (maker of Seresto) and it is a counterfeit. Seresto collars should have NO dates on the tin. The inside of the tin color should have a metallic sheen. The print on the collar should be in black not white. The FDA is warning consumers to be cautious when buying any medication or preventative for your pet online. Buy from a reputable store or veterinarian. When in doubt ask us or call the the maker of the product.(1-800-255-6826 is Bayer’s Consumer Contact Number)"

LOS ANGELES — Amid a congressional subcommittee calling for a recall, a class of pet owners filed a federal lawsuit against the makers of Seresto flea and tick collars after documents obtained from the EPA showed more than 75,000 reports of injury or death of animals using the product
