(34,136 posts)My barn dog sits in the horse barn aisle and eats alfalfa. *sigh* I am certain he would be a real problem for anyone or anything that would threaten me or the animals around but for the most part he eats alfalfa.

(5,420 posts)Hope you got a good supply of alfalfa in! Thank You!

(22,199 posts)Our dogs aren't allowed at the barn. They eat too much horse poop.

(34,136 posts)The manure pile is the favorite place of every dog I have ever owned. He would be there if I did not have him blocked in and the alfalfa is likely his second preference.

(5,420 posts)but we got after her and she almost never eats horse poop anymore.

(34,136 posts)I have a rescue who will eat anything and he is bigger than me so..... Actually he is a good boy but I need to get my work done so he does not get to make the trip to "the pile" or I have to go look for him. He does not seem to be a breed that is used to this kind of work. He goes for the goodies and just hanging with me. *squeeeeee* More protection than anything. We have some bad stuff that happens around here sometimes and I get nervous and short of arming myself I take my trusty, "mess with my woman and I will kill you dead" scary dog. He is a sweet pumpkin but scary looking to those who do not know he will do anything for a kiss on the nose.

(22,199 posts)Its the same reason they roll in it, or anything dead (double yack!). If they smell like their, "prey", they can sneak up on them more easily. And they think it smells like heavenly perfume.
Last time we had the septic tank cleaned, they dropped a bit of the sludge in the driveway. One of the Pyr's (solid white), immediately went out and rolled in it. Gawdawful!
MuseRider
(34,136 posts)I know....nothing ever quite that bad here but they roll on dead skunks or dead anything and they come in the house with maggots then the mad scramble to get them out and hose them down and soap them up etc.....you know very well. One of them dragged home a whole deer haunch that they found somewhere in the woods, we have lots of wooded area since my animal keeping days are closing and I wanted more woods than pasture as I got older. Lovely, sweet Lab who I thought just might chew me up as I tried to take it away. He gave in but those resentful looks just about made me cry (after I laughed). BUT THE SEPTIC TANK! OMG that must have been horrid! How long did it take to get that beautiful white coat back? Ewwwwwww.

(32,143 posts)Our first Lab ate farm manure we had trucked in for our vegetable garden and I thought that was so bizarre. Of course it made her sick....in the house, of course!!

(32,143 posts)We sat down to eat dinner that night and she sat down next to me and immediately lost it all.
Ive cleaned up some awful messes in my life between having pets and kids, but that one ranked right up there as one of the worst! What is so appealing about that to dogs defies explanation! I am glad you taught Shadow to leave it alone! Ill bet shes a fast learner.

(5,420 posts)Thanks for the vivid image of "one of the worst!" LOL

(34,136 posts)It was this way with kids too and as an old ICU nurse I did some of the most horrible things in trade for anyone else who would take care my patient if they vomited. I do not do well with vomit. Manure vomit smells and that does me in too. I can take anything else, guts hanging out....bad and deep cuts.....you name it I can take care of it, even awful poop but not vomit.

(5,420 posts)Sounds like you might have had an intriguing time in an ICU. And some horror stories.
Thanks!

(12,486 posts)Can't handle puke period I freak out with terror of it. I can't handle gag noises. When kitty gets sick I plug my ears.
It has taken me a lifetime to get used to cleaning up kitty barf, and hairballs. Still when it happens I plug my ears and my heart pounds and I use half a roll of paper towels so I can't feel it.
When a human pukes I plug my ears and run away.
