Our "award winning" beagle! (a little pic heavy!)

My wife entered our furry four-legged loudmouth beagle (Rembrandt, AKA Remy) into a photo contest through one of the radio stations in Columbia and he won! We are excited that he was cute enough to get a few votes and that we can enjoy the prize package (we still aren't sure what we won yet, but we do know that it is worth about $750). The pic my wife submitted is the first one (Super Beagle!). The other pics are just a couple of my favorites of him as a pup and now as a "teen" of almost 2 years old.

It's the only thing that stops him from being in really really big trouble when he eviscerates a pillow or steals food off the counter! He turns on the look and his mommy forgives him instantly. I'm a little harder to win over...it usually takes that look along with hugs and kisses before I forgive him!

His ears are one of the things that drew us to him. He was the big boy of the litter and I'm not normally one to take the big boy, I tend to like the runts. But those ears were just too much. That and his story.

His mother was a small beagle and was found wandering around town and rescued by a lady who does a Great Dane rescue. She actually thought that the mom was in good health, but it turned out that she was starving but pregnant with 11 puppies. Remy was unfortunate enough to get stuck in the birth canal because of his size and ended up drowning in the amniotic fluid. The lady birthing them yanked him out and gave him mouth to snout breathing and revived him. Even though he was the biggest of the litter he was also the most submissive and never got to feed since his brothers and sisters pushed him out of the way. His back story, those giant ears, and the fact that he was born on my wife's birthday meant I wasn't going to have much say in the choice! He was the wife's choice right from the first second she saw him.

As the photographer, I thank you again! Took me for-ev-er to get the ears flying shot! But well worth the effort since that shot embodies Remy's spirit. Now if we could just teach him to show that spirit a little less through the howling!

But our little guy howls in that perfect beagle way...head to the sky, neck extended, mouth in the "O" and lets loose. Usually to let us know that a squirrel has invaded the yard and he is on the case or to let every other dog for miles know that he is there and ready to flop over and play dead should they approach him!

My wife wasn't sure about beagles, but she has been converted to a beagle lover by this guy. We got him shortly after we had to put our old beagle girl to sleep after a stroke. Remy was the medicine we needed. We swear that our old girl's spirit is guiding him since he has adopted soo many of her little weird idiosyncrasies.
