(15,058 posts)When we lost Riley (GSD) in October 2019, I swore that he was our last dog.
That lasted until August 2020. Now we have Snoopy (mixed breed - likely part Great Dane) here - breaking all the house rules on a regular basis. No dogs on the furniture! HA! Good luck with that. I was planning to reupholster that chair anyway. The chewed off fabric on the bottom just gives it character.

(15,058 posts)A close friend of mine just lost her very first dog who was 12.
She asked me, after suffering greatly when Gracie died, how could I ever bring another dog into the family?
I explained to her that she would indeed grieve for a while. But she will always have those twelve years of love to remember.

I can't walk much now, even with my cane, so I can't have dogs any more. But I do so wish I could.

(65,215 posts)another after they're gone, it would have to be a senior, too, so it won't be left behind when I die. (I am 71years old.)

(15,265 posts)be lying if I said we all didn't cry profusely. the morning we had to put him down He was having a hard time breathing that morning and the entire family (wife and 3 young daughters)> took him into the vet not knowing it would be for the last time. Our vet examined him and said "It's time. At this point you would be keeping him alive for you, not him." Golden retrievers are such a loving loyal dog it made it all the much harder to say good bye. I had jogged many 5 miles runs with him and we had a special bond,

We got 2 kittens about 4 months before we lost tour goldie to cancer ( he was 13) and one of them I swear was a Golden in another life. He stays glued to me, it's uncanny.

(2,859 posts)I miss my old Samson. He made it to be 15 years old. I used to walk him without a leash. One time a woman saw us walking along and said 'hey doesn't he have to be on a leash?'. I turned and said, 'watch out! He's comin' at you at full speed!'. That made the woman laugh. Samson's top speed was .5 mph. He knew how to mosey on down the road and take his time. Good luck with your dogs!
