She's totally accepting his patty paws and nuzzles. Morgan will stand nose to nose with her, and they just kind of study each other.
Sophie's fur is slowly but surely filling back in and her appetite is much better, although she's kind of manipulative about how she goes about eating. That's fine. I have all the time in the world to stir her food into a little mound for her.

(15,502 posts)#1. Serve the gently heated canned food with a pill crushed and mixed in. Put the food down and depart for about 5-minutes.
#2. Return to push the food into a mound and then leave him so he'll finish up. He likes it if I hold the plate while he finishes, and I will sometimes, but not all the time.
We only have to push the food into a mound one time per meal, but we do have to do it or he won't finish. He won't die if he doesn't eat the entire serving, but I want to make sure he gets the whole pill down.

(128,389 posts)I have been quietly following your threads but had to respond to this one... When I kitteh-sit, I make the "mounds" too. That's because I notice that the cat pushes the food to the edges of the bowl as she is licking it, resulting in her "running out of (accessible) food" until I gather it back together again in a mound. And that goes for both dry or wet food (and she likes the gravy type).
She has me trained too because she'll come find me and motion for me to follow her right out to the kitchen where she will then plop herself next to the bowl and then stare at me and then stare at the bowl with the food all pushed around the edges.

(204,695 posts)He's become a messy eater since he had dental surgery (tooth extraction) a couple of years back, so he gets only soft food and a lot of it escapes the dish.

(128,389 posts)that I put her food dish and water cup on to keep the escaped food/water contained and off the floor.
I got a whole setup here for when I am kitty-sitting including a tall scratching/stretching post and scratching lounge box (separate from her self-selected Amazon "sleeping box" that she picked out and uses every time she is here).

(204,695 posts)And I just cleaned off the tiny bits that also land on the nearby cupboard. I said he was a messy eater, LOL. But I am so grateful that I agreed to the dental surgery since he's eaten so much better. I felt horrible that he had dental problems since I've had him since he was a puppy, but I was told that it was common to his breed, small dogs with slight muzzles.
And it sounds like you have quite a set up for the kitty! My cat has a crate with all his needs in it, except for the cat tree and most of his toys - which he's avoided since the hammock fell. He inherited it and I've considered getting him a new one, but I'm not sure he'd go near it.

(128,389 posts)I'm sure your pup appreciated it. We have the option of using our hands and fingers to deal with some of the dental issues but they don't.
I know some breeds have either dental issues or I hear more commonly, problems with their spines or ears (and infections). My sister's lab has had multiple bouts of ear infections and it's always the hassle of getting the antibiotic medicine into him (the "food mound" as one option ).

(204,695 posts)And my dog does have a couple of issues, he's had a skin condition off and on, got worse during the quarantine part of the pandemic, and he's had issues with his left ear which he fights me when I try to clean/medicate it so I ended up taking him to the vet 3 weeks in a row. They have a staff there. *sigh*
But he's really much better, gets one pill a day for itchiness and fish oil on his food. I used to use cheese for the pill, but awhile back when he had an intestinal issue that required two additional pills, he wouldn't go for the cheese so I tried deli roast beef - and now he'll accept nothing else! He'd be happy if that's all I gave him, LOL. But he turned 15 in March so I'm grateful that all he has is an improving skin issue. *knock on wood* He went to the groomer Wednesday and she said he looked so much better.

(128,389 posts)and getting them to the vets.... At least you were able to find a food to get the meds in. My sister's dog loves a rice/boiled chicken mix and I think that is what my sis will use to get him medicated.
You are doing good with your "baby" and hope he improves further.
