I just fed the ferals and Mittens the Kitten let me give her an extra pets, this afternoon. It's so nice to have her trust me, that much.

Of course, his little ears were still kind of flat, but his expression just looked forlorn. Now he's a handsome little guy.

And now I'm starting to think about getting him a companion, maybe in the next week, or so.

I didn't want to say anything in the face of your tremendous losses, but I'm glad you've reached that point. Our rescue doesn't adopt out single kittens unless their new home will have an animal buddy for them. The kitten will be happier, and you too, I suspect.

I used to resist the idea, as if I was trying to replace someone irreplaceable, but I finally learned that until I opened up my home to another I'd be stuck in my grief.

The way it feels to me when I have welcomed a new cat, which I typically do a matter of days, is that the love I have had for a departed cat is still there, but just sort of forlornly floating free, with nowhere to go. A successor cat gives the love a new place to anchor.
