Anyone else feeling the pinch from price gouging of pet food and supplies

I'm off to the vet this morning, not because there is anything wrong with my Sammy dachshund, but because it is time to get his heartworm and flea treatment. These days I am forced to go to the vet for a prescription and forced to buy flea and heartworm medication that costs twice as much in the US as it does in Canada and other countries. I love my dog baby so I do it, but it is costing me an arm and a leg. Does anyone have experience ordering heartworm meds from Canada? (I have been using Bravecto)

My advice is to research prices online and then ask your veterinarian to match the prices on Chewy.com, PetMeds.com, Costco, Sam's, or one of the other discounted online retailers for pet medications or print their online prescription form, give it to your veterinarian and ask them to complete and fax back.

As to pet foods, yes there is a lot of price increases that look to me like gouging.

Pharmaceuticals, though are a nightmare in this country. A simple prescription for a common drug used in both humans and animals--like Amoxicillin or Augmentin can be 10-20x higher for noninsurance purchases in pharmacies compared to what a veterinary clinic would typically charge. Basically US has one hell of a big problem. Whether you could purchase veterinary heartworm and other medications via mail from Canada is iffy, just as it is for other medications. Probably there is somewhere, but you may face having them conviscated.

I used to have three dogs and now have one. I would love to adopt more, but the Vet bills for just regular check ups and blood work are so high.

I would love to get another Docker but am not sure I can afford it. It is so sad because there are so many dogs that need adopting and they are such great company.

They verify rx with vet before shipping. Also got a $20 site credit for ordering it!

Shop around online &, if need be, buy 1 dose from vet to protect dog until shipment arrives.

Yes pet food procrs, esp canned cat food is through the roof!

I set up auto ship orders on chewy.

My girl Willow has such a sensitive tummy that we have to keep her on a steady diet of Blue Buffalo Blissful Belly canned food. (Otherwise she throws up. All. The. Damned. Time.) Chewy has been a lifesaver. I don't know how I'd manage if I had to lug a load of those cans home every week. (And they never have enough of the stuff to be able to really stock up.)

Like you, SheltieLover, I have an autoship order set up, and it's a real sanity saver.

Glad Chewy has you covered!

I agree, it is incredibly convenient to have them drop food at my door.

That was in Oct.

Often there are rebate or discount coupons as well.

And, in my brief history with chewy, they always seem.to have a signoficant promo code. Auto ship orders get a discount too.

I hope this is helpful.

For HeartGuard. Rechecked and discovered that Chewy still has THE best price!

And I do get most all of our pet supplies from Chewy.com. Can't recommend them enough!

We still have a bunch of cats, so I totally understand about vet bills. This is why we haven't adopted another dog. We will eventually get another one, but we have debts to pay down first. We used to get our flea, tick & heart worm medication from 800petmeds.com. I don't know if their prices are still good, but they were less expensive than some of our other options. You might want to check out their website too, just in case. It's so expensive to have a pet these days. We really shouldn't have to have a prescription for flea tick and heart worm meds, but will all the crazy wingnuts we have in our country I guess I understand. I believe some form of ivermectin is used for heart worm, so that might be another reason these medications have gone up so much.

I feed my cats Fancy Feast Pate because it has no grains in it. Not only has the price gone up .04 a can, but the amount in the can has decreased from 3.5 oz. to only 3 oz.

And now I'm finding it becoming scarce. They are really fussy and won't eat much of anything else. Not sure what I'm going to do if this gets worse.

She only wants a certain chicken flavor. I have read that there is a shortage of the tin cans. So I have started giving her Sheeba cuts. She only licks the gravy and leaves the rest. Not sure what I'm going to do- she's lost some weight. Will have to talk to the vet about her too.
