I was startled out of a peaceful sleep by the sound of SOMETHING, SOMEWHERE falling to the floor

I looked at the clock and saw 1:30.

Got up, walked around and saw nothing amiss. Weird. I crawled back into bed and encountered a foreign object - a tin foil ball. So, apparently Madoc wanted to play fetch but knew how much I dislike being pounced awake. Instead he created a racket to wake me up. Clever, but annoying, boy!

Then I looked at the clock, again. It wasn’t 1:30. It was only 11:30!! I had been asleep for about 45 minutes!!

Got up, again, and finally found Gryff in the hallway and Madoc perched on the fireplace mantel, no doubt distancing himself from whatever he knocked down. Perhaps Gryff was in cahoots. Who knows. At least it didn’t sound like something glass.

Oh, and when I went to put on my slippers there was something pushed inside. A wadded up paper ball. Go figure.

They’re plastic and they make a glorious sound bouncing around. Now that I know what it is it doesn’t startle me as much. And I set the bottles back up so he can knock them down again. He seems to enjoy it. He gets bored

4. I had a cat who liked to play fetch.

I also had two large dogs. They slept in the bedroom with me with the door closed because they weren’t to be trusted roaming the house. My cat would bat paper balls against the bedroom door in the middle of the night in an effort to get me to come play. I’d get up and grab the paper ball. Some mornings there’d be 5 or 6 of them scattered on the bed where I’d dropped them. She was persistent, if nothing else.

5. The full moon's coming...

Expect them to be active during the night until the weekend.

Mikey was really busy all night during the full moon. I got him a handful of those fuzzy mice to play with. He would pick them up and fling them all over the place, sometimes in places he couldn't reach which prompted him to come to bed, if only for ten minutes, hoping to inform me he had lost all his mice.

His adjustment to being indoors day and night was rough for him but he was pretty good about it and only had temper tantrums early on and during full moons. Cats are crepuscular so dawn and dusk are prime time for them.

It sounds like your boys are going into their kitty-teens, fun times!

Many animals are crepuscular, that's why wildlife watching is best at those times. Bringing animals into our homes does not take that part of their nature away, it only teaches them to be dependent upon us in return for training us to be less selfish. Not saying we shouldn't have pets, there's mutual benefit there so it works for both species involved.

I learned the term a long time ago, not sure where I learned it but it was a while ago.

That's also evolution's answer to their survival niche along with the night-vision eyes. I think it's cool.

Mikey learned, while at my house for a total of three months, that people can't see in the dark. He started using the dark to torment me. I made a game of it most of the time. It isn't a large place but he found places to ambush me every morning before the breakfast ritual began.

17. Somebody once said, having a cat is like bringing a little bit of the jungle into your house

I think that’s kind of what we love about them. I am often reminded of Oscar Wilde quote about feasting with Panthers. You do it for the thrill of the thing

Good thing it was only a paper ball in your slipper. I once awoke to a dead mouse in on of mine.

He was incredibly mischievous., but mellowed a bit after age 2. One of his favorite things was going to the top of the fridge to lean down the front and knock all the magnets and notes to the floor. He only did it when I was in the kitchen so it could be a repeating game of me putting them back up, him knocking them down again.

At night he liked to swat his tennis ball around. The thwacking sound when it hit a wall would wake me up.

They certainly are thick as thieves. I really lucked out with Gryff's great personality. He's the perfect balance for Madoc.
