I walked past him one day when he was napping on the corner of a desk, and I looked at him and thought, "This guy has people opening doors for him, giving him food and water and affection, he has a free meal ticket for life, he really is living the life of Riley." And so I started calling him Riley, because if he's living the life of Riley, he must be Riley, right?
For those who are too young to know what we're talking about: I used to watch that TV show "The Life of Riley" starring William Bendix when I was a kid in the late 1950s. I didn't know it was also a radio show in the 1940s (I was born in 1949), but now I have a Sirius satellite radio in my car and there's an old-time radio classics station on Sirius that sometimes plays "The Life of Riley" radio episodes and I always enjoy listening to them while I'm driving.

(26,308 posts)I have a vague memory of the show. I think my parents probably watched it. I do know that I grew up hearing that saying.
