Can anyone explain this weird behavior of our cat?

Yesterday morning she started frantically started licking her back and paws and rolling over. Then she would run around. She had a little bit of a crazed look in her eyes (Kind of like a MAGAT). She meowed more than normal and was super friendly and needed attention. At first I though it might be fleas. But now I'm thinking it was an allergic reaction to something she ate. She was back to normal after a couple of hours and today she's just fine.

Anyone?

about the toys but if I sprinkle it on the floor they go nuts. Roll around in it, meowing, a little drooling sometimes.

(who was, indeed a veterinary neurologist and professor). He told me of teaching senior students about the array of presentations of "normal." He'd teach for weeks on canids (wild and domestic), horses, cows, and some time on pigs and goats. Even considerable discussion of human neurological "normals." At the end of those weeks, he'd be asked "what about cats?" His somewhat sardonic answer? "There are no normals..."

I always found that more true than not. And rather amusing. (And, of course, he did teach them feline neurological concepts ultimately).

That said what you describe is either excitation (the catnip issue is plausible) or a sign of discomfort of some type--whether a biologic (pain) or aggravation (local irritation, constipation) or psychic response. If eating, drinking, defecation, and urination are normal--as directly observed, then I'd look at a behavior response to something or a reason for excitation.
