Related: About this forumWell, one of my fears came true today.
My daughter found a young cat 16 years ago (she was 11 at the time). Half its face was torn off, it was very skinny and covered in fleas. We took her in and named her Lola.
Last night, only a week after being diagnosed with a melanoma in the lung, she was having trouble breathing.
My daughter took her in to the emergency clinic today, and called me later in tears (I could barely even understand what she was saying.)
I rushed to the clinic.. Long story short, about an hour later we said our final goodbyes and let her go.
This pic is from about a year ago, in her catio.

RIP Lola, you were very much loved.

(8,824 posts)We have had to say goodbye to 6 dogs. All were in the 10-13 year range and lived very good lives for a dog.
Will probably take a break after our current 13 year old Huskador passes.

The best thing any of us can give these innocent critters is a good home.

(10,252 posts)No doubt it's tough to see your daughter in tears. I've lost several pets, and I'll share what helps to get thru it.
We go thru life thinking that it will never end. But in truth all living things will die, and we cannot escape death. For someone, pet or person, who is in terminal pain, death can be a welcome relief. We don't want to see our beloved pets in pain. Finally, we have big open loving hearts, and there are other animals in need of a forever home. When you and your daughter are ready, consider adopting another kitty.

She turned out to be a pretty tabby.

(255,551 posts)But I am still so very sorry, I've been there and know the pain of losing a beloved long time pet. I lost my 16-year-old dog at the end of June and it still hurts so bad every day, I had him since he was a puppy. In many ways, losing a pet can be tougher than losing a person since your pet is always with you.

(29,406 posts)...in these threads:
In our family, when we have had to make these right but heart-wrenching choices, or when Mother Nature has beaten us to it, we have decided to call it liberating the spirit. Somehow the softer wording helps a tiny bit.
And when we have welcomed a new kitty, we always refer to them successors, never replacements.
Here is a cyber hug for you and for your daughter - ((((( >^..^< )))))

Very long run of love and purrfect antics for a cat that was down on its luck before your family came along.
