Suggestions on protecting table legs from a puppy's need to gnaw.

Bought a new dining room table set back in November. Skippa, the new Golden Retriver puppy likes the chair legs...they taste good! So, the chairs are relocated to the spare bedroom. Now I need to save the table legs from his teething. I gave him a pine stick to chew on, but, of course, the table legs are much tastier.

Get a refillable kong toy. Fill it with tasty treats and peanut butter and put it in the freezer. iscooterliberally Feb 2023 #8

When puppy chews on his stick, give him a treat.
Gradually withdraw treats until he understands the drill.

When puppy approaches the table legs, say a stern NO.
Then put puppy into time out (cage) for a minute or two.

with my Shepherd puppy.
Sandwich bag on leg covered by a small sock wrapped with some tape to secure, or you can use a yarn tie to secure. Spray the sock with bitter apple from the pet store. Just takes a couple of knaws before they get the message.

Hope this helps.

Several awful tasting sprays available. The bag or plastic wrap first, then a few strips of cloth or something with the orange or yuck. One taste is sometimes enough, but a golden likely will keep trying for a chew. My two year old lab hasn't stopped looking for things to eat. And definitely, lots of things meant for chewing

get them off. Never thought about spraying something they don't like the small of on them. Good call.

I don't like to give my dogs wooden sticks because of splinters. I buy the largest rawhide sticks I can find and use them to redirect puppies. It is so funny to watch little tiny puppies attack a king size rawhide.

Let your puppy have that in his crate. He'll enjoy that and forget about those table legs. You can also wrap the table legs in plastic wrap and spray them down with bitter apple spray. That will deter him from wanting to chew them. It's really all about redirecting that energy. The puppy is going to chew on something no matter what it is. Good luck!
