I have a very sad cat

We have a 13-year-old cat named Lolli who’s been with his mother for his entire life. She died of cancer this spring. Lolli is a big boy—about 17 pounds—and he consoles himself by eating. He’s been whining about food a lot and I’ve been feeling sorry for him and providing all the snacks and treats he asks for. I know this has to stop because he’s getting fatter, but for now he gets his snacks.

Maybe you could try a lick mat for his treats. It might slow him down a bit. japple Jul 2023 #10

We can't even explain about the rainbow bridge. I hope Lolli finds peace soon.

When Madoc lost his sister, Morgan, and I lost my sweet Sophie Stinky Toes, my vet came to the rescue. He gifted me Gryff.

We just don’t know how to console them. I think I would pamper my baby with treats too after losing his mother.

I’m probably going to have the same issue soon. I have an older former feral cat in my house. I have her two adult daughters as well, and one of them was born blind. When their mom eventually dies, the daughters will be heart broken. They are a very tight knit little family.

Cats can get diabetes. They can have heart failure. It's possible that he's whining about his loneliness and not about food. You could end up making him sick or killing him, and the food will not relieve his sadness.

I know that it hurts you to see him hurting. Ask a vet for advice on how to help the cat deal with his loss. Try giving him lots of extra attention. Maybe visits from a cat or even a dog that belongs to a friend or neighbor would help. Or new toys or cat videos. Something to help him direct his attention away from his sadness.

Good luck with helping him get over grieving. Give him some hugs for me.

We have six cats and a foster kitten. He’s not so much lonely as missing his mother.

We all know how distracting kittens can be--give him something very active to focus his attention on.

When we lost our Pyr girl suddenly (she died at the vet's office), the two boys looked for her for quite awhile. Then, one of the boys got very sick with cancer. We tried really hard to save him for a couple months, before finally putting him down. It was terribly sad for everyone, but the remaining Pyr had time to say goodbye. He still grieved for a long time.

Then, we adopted the new, young Pyr pupster. He has perked up considerably.
