One of the interesting theories on why they did this was that they were looking for information on Howard Hughes. Hughes made his money from oil drilling bits. He had loaned Nixon’s brother money at one point and CREEP was worried he was hedging bets by either donating money or giving information to the Dems.

I haven’t watched the Woody Harrelson series. In “Gaslit” (Julia Robert’s and Sean Penn) the Cubans involved in this were saying “Why are you doing this? Your guy is going to win”.

As far as I know, the motive is not certain. Hubris? Paranoia?
