1. I should have taken French language class more seriously
Hmmm.
I better go translate since this sounds like an interesting read! 👍 This one? I cannot imagine the task they're facing. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/0a576a73-3067-4853-9100-395864194f85 |

2. Struggling through it...
as I haven't bothered to keep up my French skills, I think there was a dedication sort of event with Macron and designees and architects. It seems they have announced who will embark on the project and there was talk about how to go about restoration, the long argument being, what will have to be modernized and what can be restored in more historic manner.
I think. |

5. You got it!
Macron backed down from his original plan to have a competition to select the best "contemporary" re-design of the tower that burned last year and gave a green light or "feu vert" to a restoration of the 19-century original, which wasn't exactly original but very familiar and beloved nonetheless

6. Whew!
I haven't really tried to engage with French in years and now I'm a little ashamed. Fortunately a lot comes back when you actually try to read it. I should go find a French novel, that often does a lot while being entertained.
Something to do over the next 18 months of quarantine! |

8. bonne idee !
In fact I just finished Les Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir in English (it is quite a page turner once you get the hang of it!) and am going to start on the French version today. It's really absorbing!
Here's a free French version that can be borrowed and read online one hour at a time (it was 14 days until recently, c'est la vie): https://archive.org/details/lesmandarins00beau And here's a free English version which can also be checked out an hour at a time OR 14 days (with a waitlist): https://archive.org/details/mandarinsnovel00beau p.s. a DU French novel-of-the-month club might be interesting! ![]() |

9. Merci beaucoup!
I really have to work on due to the length of time. I was only required to read three books in college, one of which was L'Étranger, Albert Camus... a classic that I read in Jr. High, in English. I read a lot of odd things that could be found in our family library, families used to have those. I was relieved to be able to choose what to read first, I chose L'Étranger because I knew the story. I think I'll do that again. Everything else will be easier after that.
I have a few reference books and a couple good dictionaries, somehow I think I've found a teachable moment. Thanks for the inspiration! ![]() |

3. Here is some background from CNN:
They haven't reported this particular development yet that I can find online but this tells you what the issue was and why this is welcome news to most people including me who weren't looking forward to seeing an ultra-modern solar super-tower on top of Notre Dame
