2. I've watched many, many

documentaries and non-fiction films about D-Day and each time I cry. How can you NOT cry?

When I visited France in 1997 we went to the beaches where the invasion occurred. I saw huge rectangular "buildings" sticking out of the ocean and I couldn't find out what they were. I even asked older men on our tour and they had no clue. That really bugged me for years. Finally, about 15 years ago I found my answer when I did my own research. They were caissons. Then I couldn't figure out how they kept these enormous man-made concrete buildings from sinking, allowing a harbor to be made. Churchill designed them early in the wars. What a genius move! They were made to last decades but a rare storm later that month destroyed them. The weather really screwed up a lot of our efforts, from D Day to the Battle of The Bulge were very damaging and delayed so much of our advances.
