Kids, some as young as 11, now in NYPD’s facial recognition database

AUG 01, 2019 | 8:33 PM

Mug shots of kids as young as 11 are now part of the NYPD’s facial recognition database, a disclosure that raised concerns that police are enacting policy without transparency and using a technology that has been called into question in other cities.

The NYPD for about four years has used facial recognition technology to link juvenile mug shots to images at crime scenes, according to a report by the New York Times. Most of the photos are of teens 13 to 16 years old, but kids as young as 11 are part of the database. New York state allows mug shots of suspects who are that young and have been charged with the most serious felonies.

The NYPD says it has in place careful guidelines for using facial recognition, and a “hit” off a database search is just a lead and does not automatically trigger that person’s arrest.

“No one has ever been arrested based solely on a positive facial recognition match,” said Assistant Commissioner Devora Kaye, an NYPD spokeswoman. “It is merely a lead, not probable cause. We are comfortable with this technology because it has proven to be a valuable investigative method."

1. This is a scary thing to get started.

I have seen people who are not related and don't even know each other who look almost identical to some one else.
