Stopping the scourge of false confessions

Why would someone confess to a crime they didn’t commit?

It happens more often than one might expect. According to the Innocence Project, fully one-quarter of wrongful convictions overturned by DNA evidence involve a false confession. Many involve promises of leniency offered to suspects that later disappear. Later, the confession is held up as definitive proof the state has found the right person.

Under current Connecticut law, police can lie to children during interrogations to extract false confessions. A movement is underway to change that.

We know from experience that false confessions happen. There are now many proven cases of people who have admitted, in detail, to crimes they are later conclusively proven not to have committed.
