Autopsy finds Cuban immigrant in ICE custody died of homicide due to asphyxia

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Cuban migrant held in solitary confinement at an immigration detention facility in Texas died after guards held him down and he stopped breathing, according to an autopsy report released Wednesday that ruled the death a homicide.

Geraldo Lunas Campos died Jan. 3 following an altercation with guards. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the 55-year-old father of four was attempting suicide and the staff tried to save him. ... But a witness told The Associated Press last week that Lunas Campos was handcuffed as at least five guards held him down and one put an arm around his neck and squeezed until he was unconscious.

His death was one of at least three reported in little more than a month at Camp East Montana, a sprawling tent facility in the desert on the grounds of Fort Bliss, an Army base. ... The autopsy report by the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office found Lunas Campos’ body showed signs of a struggle, including abrasions on his chest and knees. He also had hemorrhages on his neck. The deputy medical examiner, Dr. Adam Gonzalez. determined the cause of death was asphyxia due to neck and torso compression.

The report said witnesses saw Lunas Campos “become unresponsive while being physically restrained by law enforcement.” It did not elaborate on what happened during the struggle but cited evidence of injuries to his neck, head and torso associated with physical restraint. The report also noted the presence of petechial hemorrhages — tiny blood spots from burst capillaries that can be associated with intense strain or injury — in the eyelids and skin of the neck.

A white woman gets killed in Minneapolis, national outrage.
A Hispanic man in Texas gets strangled to death, and barely a peep.

A life has been lost due to the brutality of ice. Unfortunately, white privilege strikes again.

Tough to do, but we need to see all of our brothers and sisters exactly the same.

If nothing else just think about it!!

I posted something on Fakebook after Renee Good's murder listing at least 20 people that ICE killed last year and posed the question, "Notice a pattern?" All but two of the names on that list were quite clearly people of color. The uncomfortable truth is that white people are really good at ignoring a problem until it starts to affect them personally (and I say that as a very embarrassed member of that group). We'd do well to remember the poem: "First they came for..."

Is anybody else outraged?

All I hear are excuses from Trump supporters.

While I agree with you that racism is real and the deaths of people of color are too easily overlooked, I think that all the murders and abused by ICE are being ignored and excused by way too many Americans.

I hope there's a growing database for when justice rolls around.

more deaths in ICE custody last year than any other year ever.

No one could've grown up in the Deep South, and doubt that.

And they see this Trump dictatorship as their best chance of bringing that about.

Anyone who is not a rich, pasty white asshole.

Then, they think that the poor whites are going to be their new wage slaves because they will force them into it.

The fact that some states (including my own home state) seem to have a majority of said animals is just horrifying.

It’s almost as if they know if they break in to a home in Texas there’s a good chance they don’t survive
