It's Official - The Backlash is HERE.

Last edited Sat Jan 19, 2013, 06:29 PM - Edit history (1)

The nation is fed up with dumbass GOP/ALEC/NRA gun laws.

Guns in schools.

Guns in bars.

Guns in church.

Guns in public buildings.

They are sick of stupid Stand Your Ground and "Castle" laws that legalize murder.

They are sick of the regularity of assault weapon massacres.

They are sick of the NRA.

President Barack Hussein Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden stood up to the asshole blood-drenched big-money GOP Gun Nut Lobby and presented them with a HUGH....

FUCK YOU

Bravo Mr. President.

Bravo Mr. Vice President

Washington (CNN) -- Unlike most issues these days that divide along party lines, the immediate fate of President Obama's new gun proposals will depend not as much on Republicans as his fellow Democrats in the Senate.

Senate Democratic leadership sources tell CNN that passing any new legislation will be extremely difficult because more than a dozen vulnerable Democrats from conservative states will probably resist much of what the president is pushing.

These Democratic sources say the most likely legislation to pass will be strengthening background checks, since it is the least overt form of gun control and it also appeals to gun rights advocates' emphasis on keeping guns away from people with mental health and criminal problems.

Democratic leadership sources say they intend to spend next week -- the first week the Senate is in session -- canvassing red-state Democrats to see what, if anything, is doable. Democratic senators who advocate various gun control measures will be lobbying their colleagues as well.

They already have pretty much guaranteed lobbying jobs (or other representative jobs where they use their "famous name" for profit) if they lose, so what is the point? I'm guessing the lobbying jobs pay more and are easier than being in Congress.

Source: Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

FAIRBANKS — Sen. Mark Begich gave a tepid response to firearm restrictions proposed by President Barack Obama on Wednesday, saying he’s “not at all anxious” to pass new laws as an approach to curbing gun violence.

Obama unveiled his plans for new gun restrictions at a news conference, asking Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, along with expanded background checks for gun buyers. The proposals come a month after a shooting in Newtown, Conn., killed 26 people, including 20 elementary school children.

Begich, a Democrat, cautioned in an interview with the News-Miner that he’d only seen bullet-point summaries of Obama’s proposals and wanted to learn more details. He said he is unlikely to support new gun restrictions, preferring instead to focus on enforcement of existing laws to attack the problem.

“I think they’ve got a long haul here,” Begich said of the Obama administration’s gun proposals. “There are some of us who just fundamentally believe in a Second Amendment right.”

Clinton closed his remarks with a warning to big Democratic donors that ultimately many Democratic lawmakers will be defeated if they choose to stand with the president.

“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”

The vocal minority of GUN NUTS using a tragedy to further their political agenda?

Or the vocal minority of GUN GRABBERS using a tragedy to further their political agenda?

There's no shortage of grave mining on either side of the issue.

Generally, legislators vote the way that'll keep them in office in the next election. That's a pretty good measure of "representing your constituents".

That's because the "tea party thing" was manufactured by a few wealthy conservatives and die-hard racists. It was never a genuine, grass roots movement. Dick Armey paid for buses to bring tea baggers from as far away as South Dakota to that first tea party event held at the D.C. Capitol.

"Hey! Who wants a free ride to Washington? We're all gonna go shout insults at that black muslim President!"

The whole sordid thing was almost totally contrived and manufactured hype.

Hand guns are the real problem.

... and I'd agree. But there is very little on the table to effectively deal with that: only increases in the restrictions on lawful owners.

A comprehensive approach to drug-and-gang-related handgun violence would require a massive law-enforcement initiative along the lines of the failed War on Drugs. Perhaps we could cancel that fiasco and divert its resources to an effective crackdown on gang violence.

52. Pro-gun rallies across U.S. attack Obama's curbs on firearms (bunch of dumbasses)
Sat Jan 19, 2013, 06:27 PM
Jan 2013

By Nick Carey | Reuters

- Pro-gun activists plan rallies in 49 states at "high noon" on Saturday to support the right to own firearms they say is under attack from President Barack Obama's proposals to reduce gun violence.

The rallies, to be held mostly at state capitals, were being organized by a group called Guns Across America that was launched by Texas airline pilot Eric Reed.

The U.S. debate over gun control flared in mid-December when a man killed 20 first graders and six adults in a matter of minutes at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, using an assault rifle.

In the wake of the mass killing, Obama and gun control advocates have begun a push to ban assault weapons. A number of other states have taken up gun legislation and New York, which had among the strictest gun control laws in the country, broadened its ban on assault weapons on Tuesday.

Obama also called for a ban on high-capacity magazines and more stringent background checks for gun purchasers.

Gun control advocates say American civilians have no justifiable need for assault weapons or high-capacity magazines, and they say more background checks will help keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
