(9,644 posts)To clean a pistol - remove magazine check chamber. Remove and disassemble slide. Gun incapable of firing. Proceed with cleaning. He could not have been cleaning the gun. He pulled the trigger of a fully assembled pistol.
Some pistols will fire without a magazine if there is a round in the chamber. But you still need to pull the trigger. Pulling the trigger of a gun that is pointed at yourself is an amazingly stupid thing to do.
In any case, removing the magazine and then making sure that the gun is not loaded are steps and 1 and 2 when preparing to clean a pistol.

(4,015 posts)I am anything but an expert - purely military, no private training or expertise - but shooting yourself while cleaning your gun is downright impossible. Freak accidents may occur, always by fault of the operator, but even those happen before or after the gun is cleaned.

(14,139 posts)harm anyone, ourselves or others. And wow! amazingly, we seem to make it through every day, every month, every year without harming ANYONE! How does that work?
Of course, you didn't say "harm," did you? You said "doing hram to others".
What did you mean, I wonder?

(23,225 posts)...gotta compensate...........
ANYONE who shoots himself in the jewels should permanently lose their rights to own or carry a firearm--too stupid to have one.

(18,479 posts)Of course within the realm of ideas including the Darwin Awards (the nature of which includes mostly death and suffering) my preference is for stories where the qualifying event is a rather quick, and hopefully painless, death (albeit sometimes spectacular) to accidents that feature someone maimed and/or suffering for life as a result.
No doubt most of these stories have some entertainment appeal but all of it rather gruesome if we think about it.

(40 posts)You need to be 21 to purchase a handgun from a FFL
Every state you can own/posses a handgun at 18. You can also buy a handgun in a private sale at 18.
Ghost in the Machine
(14,912 posts)State laws, which say an 18 year old can legally possess and transport an unloaded handgun, provided it is secured away, and there is no ammo within reach. If I find a law that says an 18 y/o can buy one legally through private sale, I'll be fully corrected.
I'm only going by what my 20 y/o son was told at 3 different places last week... 18 for rifles, 21 for handguns, though they were probably all FFL dealers, even if they were pawn shops.
I have no problem admitting if I'm wrong, even on an anonymous board like this.
Peace!.....and welcome to DU..
