Sunnyvale (Calif.) Prepares for Legal Battle Against NRA

On November 5, Sunnyvale voters approved a package of gun control laws known as Measure C. The city joined a growing list of cities attempting to assert local control over gun use, including San Francisco, Chicago and New York. Once Sunnyvale certifies its election results, the NRA plans to file a suit against the city in federal court.

But last week, Sunnyvale got nationwide attention for something else, becoming the latest focus in the debate over how to regulate firearms. Sunnyvale voters approved Measure C, which requires reporting of ammunition sales and bars ownership of ammo magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds. It also requires gun owners to keep their guns under lock and key and to report the theft or loss of firearms within 48 hours.

Sunnyvale Mayor Tony Spitaleri pushed for Measure C, and says he was motivated by a desire to prevent a repeat of last December’s grade-school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

San Francisco is also on the way to a ban on 10+ round magazines (and Los Angeles has discussed it), which already can't be imported, manufactured, or sold (but existing ones are grandfathered). It will be interesting to see how that part plays out. And the recording of ammunition sales I hope is tossed out - despite the talk of Newtown and children, it's hard to see how that serves any purpose other than to make shooting more expensive and difficult...

2. Bloomberg picking up their legal bills?

I understand many/most of these local efforts are part of his MAIG push to get local gun control since he was foiled at the national and most state levels.

I wonder if he'll pick up all those tabs for legal challenges if they lose, like Chicago, DC, San Francisco et. al.? The irony would be if Bloomie winds up being the single biggest contributor to the NRA and SAF with these.

Now that he's a not a mayor anymore and won't have that platform for proclaim from it may get interesting.
