Woman shoots intruder in southwest Las Vegas

And posts about it here.....

And for the 'shouldve fired a warning shot' folks: There are no warning shots, a gun is a deadly force, you only pull that trigger if you are in fear for your life and all other methods of deterring are gone. When he kicked my door in, there was no longer a deterrent preventing harm

http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/las-vegas/woman-shoots-intruder-southwest-las-vegas

A woman called police about 1 a.m. to report that a man had forced his way into her home at the Durango Canyon Apartments, 4515 S. Durango Drive, near Peace Way. Police said the man and woman had a relationship history.

The man, who police say is about 22 years old, kicked in the door and entered the woman’s home. The woman shot at him twice with a handgun, striking him once in the chest.

Don't know about how telling her story on the net, will it help or hurt her in the follow up investigation...

Good news is she was able to stop the attack, this time...
He is still breathing and that pretty much means she can't ever rest. Hopefully she'll continue living a peaceful and armed life, life is precious there's no reason not to protect it.

about the guy shooting some kids for loud music or cutting across their yards or even bad driving skills. For a lot less money I can make any door very hard to kick in. Won't work every time, but there's a good chance you won't have to clean up a lot of blood and hire a criminal attorney. If the guy spends 5 minutes trying to kick in your door, it looks better in court if you do shoot him.

Those with an RKBA have these:

  • Alamo
  • Achterhuis
  • Masada

I don't know which I would ultimately choose but for now I chose not to elect to limit my choices.

She did kind of harden her door with the old chair trick.

Really the only way to even come close to hardening a door to where it can't get kicked down, is an all steel door, in a all steel frame, bolted into a block wall.

The best part about hardening your door (If possible) is it may give you time to grab an AR or Shotgun.

looking at Google Maps, it is an apartment complex. In my experience, apartment owners tend to be pricks about making such modifications, I doubt she would be allowed to. Like I said, she may have since the hinges stayed in place. From the "door kick ins" I have seen, it is the bolt and latch that goes, not the hinges.
If you own, by all means and install an alarm if you can. By all means do all you can that your landlord will let you. The important thing is there is no such thing as a panacea or a simple solution.
The victim used the word "stalker". If that is the case, it wasn't some meth head looking for an easy TV to fence. It was personal. That changes everything.
Also, it is new construction. The door casings are shit and the construction is often shoddy. If you look at the photo, the door bolt and the dead bolt were both compromised.

she tried barricading it and she went one step further in her options available for self defense and her use of a firearm was that choice and it worked.

Of course I am guessing just as you are guessing right?

Was the victim of an attempted rape in her dorm room For about $30 I set up a system to secure her room. A few weeks later the same guy came back. He set off an alarm I had hooked to the door knob. He took off when it sounded. Others heard the noise and look out in the hall way and saw him and knew who he was. Police picked him up with in an hour. She was armed with legal mace, but didn't need it. The school didn't allow any changes to the door or fire arms.

.

That man surrenders any such protections the moment he makes the conscious choice to break and enter.

We are WAY past the time for mollycoddling him like he's a poor baby with "issues", as folks sometimes suggest (maybe he's a victim and needs therapy).

We could go on forever about hardening our doors, living in bunkers, but the threat remains.

The moment she leaves her home, there's the threat again, day in and day out.

Other than a hammer and hardening her door, what solutions are there?

This man is a violent man and if the police and DA can't take care of the community, it becomes our duty and our right to self-defend.

Unfortunately, he'll be out on the streets again before long, I suppose.

they share a hallway and tend to be fairly tight knit communities. Apartment complexes like that are not. Hopefully mace was the foam variety, which is not only effective indoors, but won't contaminate the room.
