http://www.freep.com/article/20120216/NEWS03/120216058/hot-for-teacher-Oakland-University-student-suspended?odyssey=nav%7CheadAn instructor who was the subject of a Hot for Teacher essay written by a 56-year-old Oakland University student was becoming increasingly worried about the student and accused the university of failing to address her concerns fast enough, e-mails show.
The teachers e-mails precipitated the suspension of student Joseph Corlett last fall. Corletts story came to light this week when he publicly challenged the universitys decision, saying he was considering legal action if he isnt reinstated.
Due to our recent discovery that Joseph Corlett has made his gun obsession obvious to other colleagues and has managed to make himself known in negative ways to so many other females on campus, I am feeling increasingly uncomfortable and unsafe, the instructor wrote in an e-mail sent Nov. 29 to the director of the OU Writing Center. As he has written letters to our school newspaper defending the right to carry concealed weapons on campus, I cannot feel safe knowing that he might have a weapon with him at any time.

Corlett, a concealed pistol permit-holder who said he owns four guns, admits he wrote about his right to bear arms, even on campus.

(49,445 posts)The mere thought of somebody on campus legally carrying a concealed pistol (she doesn't seem to be bothered by illegally carried handguns) renders her unable to function normally.
As soon a she knows that an individual person owns one or more guns, she becomes panicked and radically changes her behavior to avoid that person.
Sounds like she needs some mental-health services.
Now, granted, I don't know what the essay said, but says that it is both the combination of Corlett AND his firearm ownership that is driving her to refuse to come to work. That doesn't healthy.

(17,502 posts)What does having a CCW and being pro 2A, or writing an essay as such have to do with having a "gun obsession?" What happened to academic freedom? How is this really any different than me writing about "the joys of coffee" at BYU or a pro-choice essay at Bob Jones?
Was he writing about the teacher or was he writing something off the top of his head after hearing the song?
Should this really be in the academic freedom, 1A group if there was one?
Can you add some substance to your argument?

(5,072 posts)Joe Corlett, 56, of Lake Orion, Mich., admits his writings during a fall 2011 Advanced Critical Writing class contain sexual fantasies about the instructor.
And his handwritten entry, which is now in the hands of a free-speech activist group, uses the title "Hot for Teacher" -- a reference to a song on Van Halen's 1984 album about a student fantasizing about a racy teacher.

(6,185 posts)None of them ever actually DO anything.
They don't form or join any groups, circulate petitions, open gun control blogs or even petition state legislatures or congress or even write LTTE, as far as I can tell from the limited sample we have here.
Hell, in over a decade I have yet to see a single gun control blog or website that allows any participation. Just the Brady Astroturf crap with no comments allowed or deleted. There are literally thousands of shooting sports sites out here, from one that specialize in jokes about Moisin Nagant 91-30s to the AR15.com that covers just about anything that goes bang.
The controllers go online here and whine about how evil/ineffective (or both) the NRA is and how primitive gun owners in general are. But thankfully they are all either too lazy or too cheap to ever actually do anything. No wonder the politicians ignore them.
But I like it that way.
Now, I'm leaving work and picking up my "new to me" 1960 vintage Colt Detective Special, the bluing is absolutely perfect, buy some 158 gr. .38 spl to send downrange. I'll probably buy some more ammunition and a holster for it as well. Tomorrow I'm taking my daughter to the range again to work with the new snubbie she "borrowed" from me. When Illinois finally makes it "50" we'll both be set.
I guess gun owners actually do more than just talk about the issues, and that's the real difference.

(34,185 posts)And its not surprising that the OP wouldn't support the student's free expression in a class assignment or letter to the editor. No where did the article say the work was outside the scope of the assignment or that he even threatened to carry a weapon on campus.
