However I do not support the Bloomberg paid for astroturf organization that you posted about. They are not a "gun safety" organization and they propose laws that are based on cosmetic features that will do nothing to lower gun deaths. I am all for sensible laws such as opening NICS to private sales and UBC. I am also for reasonable magazine limits to what fits flush in the hand grip of a pistol or 20 rounds for a rifle. I am for safe storage and tax credits or discounts on safes and pistol lock boxes. I am for fully resourcing law enforcement and fully and heavily enforcing the laws already on the books before adding more that will not be enforced. I am not for things that this group wants to ban like bayonet lugs and barrel shrouds. When is the last time a bayonet was used to kill a person while on a weapon.

It's the only way to stay in the spotlight and keep the funds rolling in. It's why they oppose increased school security.

If they really had ferocious love they'd be at the school board office day and night demanding proper security for our schools, instead of pandering for a billionaires dollars.

5. Their message might have more meaning if they could acknowledge the NRA isn't the only gun

related entity in the nation. The delta between republicans and democrats in gun ownership/household rates is only 20%. The NRA only has about 4 million members. 35% of US households have guns... carry the one... etc.

Their call to secure firearms is a lot less hyperbolic than the images you linked. It would be nice to separate the nonsense from the useful PSA type info.

When a child dies or is injured because a gun is left unsecure in a home, it’s not a blameless accident. Responsible storage of guns can prevent the majority of these injuries and fatalities—and most Americans including gun owners agree that adults should store their guns locked and unloaded, and should be held responsible when negligent storage results in a death or injury.

I'm totally behind that. Oddly, last time we had a big thread on this, the pro-ban posters (and I use that term quite specifically in this case) refused to hold the parents responsible/criminal charges. It was all very strange. I'd have happily thrown them in jail for their negligence. So, there's some strange disconnect there.

As am I. I'm also a supporter of Don't Touch-Leave the Area-Tell an Adult Safety programs for kids but, alas, everydollar -- erm, 'scuse me -- everytown.org has an emotional vendetta against one of the biggest proponents of those sorts of safety programs.

and as their data shows, are supported by an overwhelming percentage of gun owners as well as the general public.

One question though. If a person cares to plow through all of their "resources" an entry can be found in their poll under "The table below summarizes support for other gun safety measures among both voters andgun owners."

Teach children about gun safety and to stay away
from guns All voters, favor 96% Gun owners, favor 95%
http://everytown.org/documents/2014/10/poll-memo-on-child-access.pdf

So the question is Why does MDA totally ignore the gun safety measure supported the highest by both gun and non-gun owners?

Even their own propaganda notes children are naturally curious
Expect a child to always be curious and touch a gun when he or she finds it.
http://everytown.org/documents/2014/10/its-up-to-adults-v5.pdf
Of course it is the adult who s responsible for securing dangerous items, be it a gun or bleach. Yet do we not teach children that bleach and other poisons are dangerous in case they find such unsecured?

8. I recommend handgun lock boxes as baby shower presents
Wed Mar 25, 2015, 01:04 PM

Giving a handgun lock box as a baby shower present is real action toward saving lives if one is concerned about unsecured handguns and accidental shootings by children. When parents are pregnant (especially the first time), there are often many bills, projects, and tasks in dire need of addressing before the baby arrives. Gun owners who had no need to lock up their self-defense handgun might delay getting a lock box because the baby won't even be able to roll over for a couple of months let alone get into the end table drawer. But they will soon and that's when tragedy happens.

Baby proofing items at showers are de rigueur and one should think of a gun lock boxes as one of many things gun owners will need.

There are many lock boxes out there that offer reasonably quick access to the firearm and still provide security from little fingers. Gun owners typically love gear. When I have done this in the past, the gift is appreciated and used.

For those who don't know about lock boxes there are many options from cheap to expensive. I generally prefer combinations to keyed access.

Minimal Option: Nano-vault

This is your classic mininum steel lock box with a combination lock. One gun and an extra mag just fit. It costs about $25.

I use mine in my car. Its slim enough to fit in my glove box. I can retrieve it, open it, and rack the slide easily within 5 seconds. It is Snoopy approved.

Standard electonic button lock box.

Something like this costs $99-$125. People like the buttons for quick access, but some don't like depending on electricity and the backup battery.
[IMG][/IMG]

Standard Mechanical Button Lock Box
For people who don't want to depend on electricity, get the mechanical push button lock box. They cost between $125-150.
[IMG][/IMG]
This is mine with my .357 in it. I didn't open this box for 3 years once when I kept it in a garage in the humid south and when I did it worked flawlessly. I like my AMSEC.
[IMG][/IMG]

Biometric Options large and small

For even quicker access you can purchase reliable lock boxes that use finger prints. This technology is great, but pricey.

The basic electronic button lock box with biometrics is about $350-400
[IMG][/IMG]

This slimmed down micro version is about $260-300
[IMG][/IMG]

Long Gun Option:

If your soon-to-be-parents are into long guns for home defense, then I recommend something like this:
[IMG][/IMG]
I want one of these. Its intended to be used under the bed, but I think I will put mine on top of my dresser and put the flatscreen on top of it.

*** Funny thing: I accidentally posted this in the other forum and panicked that it would earn me a hide so I deleted. For those of you here who also post there, would this post have been welcome or not in GCRA?

a) I am totally in favor of gun safes, and trigger locks. I'd even go so far as to have them mandatory for homes with children if you want to keep a gun in the home too. I didn't have a problem with the contents of your post by itself, but some GCRA members might object to the "gun porn, hey, let's use any excuse to look at guns, and more guns" aspect.

b) You self-deleted when you realized you'd posted in GCRA, knowing that I already knew you as one of our resident gunthusiasts. I think you honestly didn't realize you were in GCRA before posting, and showed some respect by self-deleting. I don't think you were intentionally disrupting, and the likelyhood of you posting there again is low.

Would you like me to block you so you can't accidentally post there again? I'll check back here tomorrow.

It really was an accident. I opened two windows with ferocious love OP from each group. I did delete because I could see how someone might call my post Gun Porn and unwelcome in GCRA so I deleted.

Because I may have something worthwhile to say in GCRA I'd rather not be blocked, but thanks for thinking of me. FWIW I read that group often and respect the SOP.

#SandyHook was the last straw for American moms. #NRA leaders don't stand a chance against @MomsDemand #gunsense

Hmmm... where else have I read these dire prophecies of the impending demise of the NRA,
the 2nd amendment and gun ownership in America?

But the usual suspects had a chance to piss and moan.

And that's about all they'll do to support more gun control.
