New Kansas Law Will Allow Concealed Carry Without Gun Permit or Training

A bill signed Thursday by Gov. Sam Brownback will allow residents in Kansas to carry concealed firearms without a permit or training.

Kansans aged 21 or older will be permitted to carry concealed guns starting July 1 when the law takes effect, even if they’re not trained or don’t have a permit, the Kansas City Star reports. That will make the state one of six to allow “constitutional carry.”

Anyone who would like to carry a concealed gun in any of the three dozen states that accept Kansas permits must go through training, a requirement that Brownback emphasized. But even with regard to Kansans, who won’t be required to go through training, he acknowledged that his youngest son had “got a lot out of” a hunter safety course recently and urged others “to take advantage of that.”

“We’re saying that if you want to do that in this state, then you don’t have to get the permission slip from the government,” Brownback said. “It is a constitutional right, and we’re removing a barrier to that right.”

Personally, I think training should be a reqirement for a CHL, but there doesn't seem to be a problem in the 5 other states, including mine, that allow for permit-less carry, despite the usual voices proclaiming that there will........................?

I agree with your comment: my preference would be shall-issue with a training requirement, petronius Apr 2015 #5
I favor training/license, but in fact catastrophe has yet to strike Vermont. Eleanors38 Apr 2015 #8

I didn't object to the permit process...that said carrying a gun every day for 15 years before shall issue in Kansas, I just didn't ever bother to get a permit after shall issue passed. There were a few times I would have carried in the last 8 years but didn't because I didn't have a permit. So....now I will carry when I feel like it and not planning on drinking.

Understanding lawful use of force isn't something people just know...hopefully people who carry take time to study up on it before they shoot someone and end up in ElDorado...

and, despite the naysayers, it hasn't been a problem at all, although I did go through the training and did get the permit for states that have reciprocity with AZ.

I would bet there have been/will be anecdotal cases of people thinking they were acting lawfully until they were booked..

but the evidence to date does not suggest that as a particularly strong necessity, problems directly arising from permit-less CC seem rare to nonexistent thus far...

The ignore school funding and massive debt but vote for this shit.

Idiots.

My CC training was worth the effort just to understand when to draw and not to draw. And had a firing part.

Amazing how fucking stupid this state is.

That is an important thing to know. On one of my trips to Florida, I took their state mandated class and it was a joke. I also realized the value of well done training requirements when most of the class were elderly former New Yorkers who couldn't figure out how to open the cylinder for the class provided .38 revolvers. I have been a strong believer in training since then, even if it means being required for a FOID in lew of UBC.
The most amusing thing about my time at McConnell was when Fred Phelps (may he rest in torment) and his "congregation" decided to picket our front gate.
